Well the test drives are tommorow going to try a 330i and 335d. The 335d could be the on to go for 30k with 7k on the clock before bartering starts. Xenons leather sat nav etc. Will do the 60 sprint in 6 seconds flat and still get 42mpg- so more boot space faster and cheaper to run. It's a no brainer but I think it's the dsg I'd miss let's see what the BMW equivalent is like.

Just sold an S5 - previously mkV R32 DSG Metallic Grey with RNS 510 (thanks to MortyGT140)

No contest - the diesel all the way - its a few years since i used a BMW auto box, but i never had any complaints, either shifting with the stick or just leaving it in sport.

Another petrol vs diesel debate. I am a big fan of diesel. Much better performance:economy ratio but I hate diesel not having a decent rev range. Its almost like when you just about to reach an orgasm, your girl friend decide to answer her mobile phone instead!
Check all the electric. All my previous Beemers do have the odd electrical gremlins

If you'd said that in the context of most diesels, fine...have you tried a 335d?  The lack of that extra 1,000-1,500 rpm can only surely be an issue on track?  That thing is so fast in every other way...never had one mind, just a couple of shuttle runs.

The GTD engine isn't too bad either - pretty sure you can get to just south of 4,500 rpm (mine's too new to try yet!).  Twin turbos on it would make it useful lower in the rev range as well if that ever becomes economical...

Yes, of course. I recommend a friend of mine and he bought one. For normal driving, diesel is a no brainer.
For nutters like me, that extra 500rpm can make a hell of a difference. Most decent sport engine rev beyond 7000rpm. Unlike diesel engine, it change tone as you rev it at different rpm. If you had driven any high revving engine Type R, M3, GT3 or any Ferrari. You will know what I mean. Your turbo diesel might beat them in straightline give and take situation but I know who is having more fun!

Yes, depends on the context!

well the deed is done.

turned out i test drove a 330i M Sport convertible & a 330d M Sport Coupe. Both seemed a lot faster than the GTI- (although some of this will be down to having each car for 40 mins on my own) v.s. 20 mins with the VW dealer driving about half the time! (tried GTI & GTD)

£29-30k should get me a year old 335d with sub-7k demonstrator, and that will include leather sat nav/ i drive/ leather adaptive xenons

cancelled the GTI today and got deposit back - i will be searching around for the right 335 as the demo i was considering seems to have been sold

I would have really liked a GTI, but couldn't wait another 4 months on top of the 3 i've waited so far
Anyway eurocanterbury will have spare allocation now, if anyone wants to remove some options you might get it a bit sooner...

nice motor tho 29-30k is still a lot of money, esp for a golf.  my golf was 4-5k less than that.  still, i'm sure you'll enjoy the 33d, amazing engine.
Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

Before you make that final decision, there must be a Golf demonstrator out there for sale that's close to the spec you wanted? Ask Eurocanterbury (where i bought my Scirrocco and were very helpful) to call around the country and find you a car close to your order? There are hundreds of dealers and therefore hundreds of demos out there.

I wouldn't worry about buying a demo, my Scirocco was a demo and it was fine, plus how long are you going to keep it for, a few years? Plus if you're looking at BMW demo cars then you're obviously open to that option.

I had a 3 series, lovely car but the Golf has more usable room, better handling etc.

Just a thought?
