RNS 510 and Bluetooth kit - advice please
« on: 25 October 2009, 09:58 »
Having said in previous posts that I am happy with the 310 in my car (and I am to be honest) I'm still thinking of upgrading to an RNS510 and may get a bluetooth kit put in while I'm at it.
I have read various threads about the Fiscon kit but I have a couple of questions. I have been looking at the Autotronics shop in Leicester (website http://www.autotronicsuk.com/index.php) who supply and fit these items. I don't doubt there are others.

1. They list three different bluetooth kits ranging from £299 to £349 one of which is the Fiscon and the others being "VW original" normal and premium. Why would I buy a Fiscon (which is the one you boys all seem to have or talk about) over a VW one, particularly when the VW one has Nokia stamped all over it and both me and the wife have Nokia phones?
2. To fit the RNS510 (which needs another aerial) and a bluetooth kit how much butchering of my car do they have to do? This is the one thing more than anything that will put me off cos if they're drilling holes and taking the car to bits I'm inclined to do without. After all, I have so far!!!
3. Would it be wiser to buy these items and have a VW dealer fit them? At least then if there's any problems with the fitting (I'm thinking warranty type things) they'd be more inclined to sort them out.

Thanks in anticipation. We are talking £1400 or so here so I need to be sure before taking the plunge. Aplolgies if they're thick questions.

Andy, fitting the headunit is a matter of a few bolts, switching a lead and putting in a code so no butchering at all. Likewise, fitting Fiscon is just plug and play and no mods to the car at all (depending of course on how and where you want your mic etc). I would have thought fitting an additional arial for the RNS510 is a bit more involved.

What's the object of the exercise to add satnav? I have tomtom on my iphone and it does a perfect job, maybe you could have something similar on your Nokia?

The Rns510 usually comes supplied with a gps antenna to fit behind the dash, the bluetooth takes about 1 hour to fit due to routing the mic but I could supply and fit the RNS and the VW bluetooth for about £900 all in.

£550 RNS510
£300 Vw premium
£50 labour

From what I've read, the Fiscon seems to do exactly the same as the VW kit, plus a bit more!
Have a quick look here to see what it does extra: http://kufatec.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=207

The Fiscon Plus kit is available as a group buy on this thread - £300 inc delivery instead of the standard £350... from Fiscon UK.
If you have any queries, Rich can sort you out on that thread.

Like posted above - fitting a replacement stereo is a case of prising off the face plate (carefully), undoing 4 torx screws, and unplugging / plugging in the new unit.  The fitting of the bluetooth module (whether its VW or Fiscon) is a case of plugging it in, and running a mic cable up the door pillar - or even into the overhead light (where the factory fit would be).  You can do this without taking anything apart really- just a few screws out and loosening a few bits.  I did it on my MK5 pretty easily in an hour.
You both have Nokia phones at the moment - but what if  you change?  The Fiscon has much better compatibility!

You can pick up the RNS on eBay for about £500-600 and the Fiscon for £300.  The other thing required will be VagCom coding to get your car to recognise all its new toys!

Darren is your man if he's local.  I'm sure he could supply you a Fiscon instead of a VW kit if you desire?
£500 less than you expected

You actually have 3 options re the bluetooth unit

Fiscon(engine read-out on the info display)
Vw premium(only works with Rsap phone and not all nokia's are Rsap)
Skoda(works with all phones but still has the functions of the vw premium)

All the above will be around £300 can poss get the second 2 cheaper

Im in Leeds Graeme,

Andy if you goto the Nokia uk website you can see the specs of the phones alternatively if you go into the bluetooth menu on your mobile you should see the remote sim access or Rsap that you can turn on.

Or

Give me the model numbers and ill have a look for you.
