petrol gauge

just bought a mk3 golf 1.4 8v as a run around and the petrol gauge doesn't work, haven't got round to looking at it yet but any ideas?

Pull the wire off the sender, ground it out if the gauge moves it is the sender at fault.

will that be in the petrol tank under the rear seats? which wire do i need to do that with?

Green one IIRC.
Golf MK3 1.8 auto and I didn't pay a grand for the "priveledge" :grin:, auto windows all round and a AC. Oh and I've got a luggage net you pricks!

Does that make my willy look bigger?

Can't remember how many wires there are or how it is earthed. If there are two wires, join them together and the guage should read full. If there is only one, touvh it onto clean metal on the body and the guage should read full. If it does, as said before, the sender is stuffed. If it doesn't, then wiring would be the next thing to check.

just had a look, took the black cap off inside the boot, and theres 4 wires going to it,
red/yellow
thin brown
thicker brown
purple/black

Two will be for the low fuel warning light. The sender unit is a round thing with a terminal and a wire usually on the centre remove it and touch it to earth as mentioned and switch ign on,observe guage.
