Help!!! DSG or manual??!!!!
« on: 23 October 2009, 13:02 »
ok  -  setting the scene  -  I'm 43 years old, married, kids  -  never did the hot hatch thing  -  love the Gti Mark 6  -  going to get one  -  test driven manual and DSG  -  first, I drove DSG, loved it, thought it was great technology but afterwards, couldn't get manual out of my mind  -  drove manual  -  loved it  -BUT I keep reading about how clever the DSG is, how the driver has auto, semi auto, flappy paddle choices etc etc...now I don't know again  -  I can see the sense of it in an Astom, a Porsche, even a Ferrari but if I want the nostalgia, the feeling of being young again, thinking 1980s, Golf Gti,
Peugeot 205 Gti 1.9....doesn't it HAVE TO be the manual....isn't the new technology taking away part of the experience....I like the leather but feel that must have the cloth as part of the experience  -  white isn't my favourite car colour but for the Golf Gti....I don't drive in heavy traffic  -  I know that's always part of the thought process...
I NEED someone to tell me what to do  -  help!!

This has been covered a zillion times already, most people will groan at seeing this again.

Have a read through this, there's nearly 40 pages of total sh!t.

You sound very similar to me and I am picking up the DSG next month. I have never had anything other than manual but it's time for a change at our age!

James, This is one subject that does lead to a heated debate. My advice to you is that I went through the exact same concerns. But to cut a long story short, picked the DSG because it is what will suit both my wife and I. No matter what other people will recommend it will be down to personal circumstances and choice. No matter what you eventually choose you will still enjoy the car.
Tornado Red 5 door GTI, DSG, Winter Pack, Lux Pack, RCD510+dynaudio, Park Assist with Camera, Sunroof, Cruise, Mud Guards & FT indicator.

if you haven't decided that you definitely want a manual, go DSG. you'll regret it if not- you can still change gears yourself with the paddles, or the stick. i don't think the manual can change gear for you...
Just sold an S5 - previously mkV R32 DSG Metallic Grey with RNS 510 (thanks to MortyGT140)

Xenons, Sunroof and ACC  -  over-specing? You'll be in at £30K  -  that's Gti R money  -  why not Dynaudio?

Just handed a cheque over for a DSG GTD...

Try google-ing DSG reliability.  Best general rule of thumb I saw was either pistonheads.com or maybe honestjohn.co.uk forums - DSG believed to be good up to 60K miles then possibly be concerned about ECU/gearbox replacement of £2-5K.  Probably not a huge risk but if you do mega miles or want to keep past the warranty it'd be a concern.
