A question about air intake
« on: 23 October 2009, 11:26 »
I've seen all the posts about drilling air boxes, and trying to get more air into the engine. But I don't understand how making a bigger hole at the air box end will get more air into the intake.
Surely you are only going to get as much air in as will pass through the throttle body anyway? And the hole at the air box is already bigger than that if you take out the strange funnel type tube.
What is the point in making more holes?

If you take "O" as the air box and "o" as the tb, then gong from: "O to o" is only going to let as much air in as going from "OOO to o" surely as "o" is already smaller than "O" and will restrict the air flow?

Also, does it matter how "smoothly" the air is getting into the TB, as it then goes into the 4 way split of the intake, where it will get split and buffeted anyway.

I can see how a new filter could make a difference, as it will let more air through quickly. Just not getting how a larger amount of air getting onto the system helps when that system gets smaller anyway as it goes along.

Am I missing some fundamental piece of physics or magic here?

Everything is an obstacle to the pistons attempts to "suck" air into the engine, that includes tb and airbox and anything else restrictive, especially the air filter. so making them more airodynamic or less restrictive is always going to help. Your right though, drilling the airbox on its own doesn't make much difference, It does make a nice chavvy noise though.

I think theres a sticky in the Mk3 section with some more info taken from Club GTi which will help you out.

Just having the inlet hole the same size as the TB hole will not give you a full amount of air. Search velocity stacks on the web which will explain why you need a trumpet on the air pipe inside the air box.
