Direct Line are a pile of big ploppy pants!!!
« on: 20 October 2009, 22:54 »
I decided to get insured with Direct Line when my insurance ran out last October.  So far they have proved themselves to be tres incompetant!!  When i first took out the policy, they got the spelling of my name wrong about 3 times.  So now that i've changed my car to the Golf, i've put my old car on temporary insurance until we sell it.  Are you still with me?  So, i tell them that although the policy is in my name, i am not the owner of the car as it belongs to my fella.  The certificate comes back saying i am the registered owner AND keeper.    I ring them up and tell them i do not own the car and they send out a new certificate.  This one says i am not the registered owner but am the registered keeper of the car.     Ring them up again and tell them i am neither - they finally get it right.

So now onto the Golf.  They said they wanted proof that the car has an immobiliser fitted.  Fair enough i suppose.  The car had personal plates fitted to it for a while and the immobiliser was fitted to the car when it had the personal plates on it.  However, the chassis number on the current MOT certificate (showing the original plates) and on the installation certificate are the same, except the MOT certificate shows "AA" at the beginning of the chassis number.  So for this reason Direct Pants wont accept this as proof!!

I have had to phone up the DVLA and get them to send me a V888 form to request a letter from them saying that the car was registered with a normal plate, changed to private, and put back to normal again, all at my expense.  This, they say, will be enough for them to accept it.  In the meantime, i'm not insured against any attempted break ins!  How f*cking infuriating is that!!

I will never go to Direct Pants again!  What a pile of cock!!

**Rant over**

My dad had the exact same problem with his VR6. Because it's a High Performance car they wanted proof that an immobiliser was fitted. He didn't have proof, so Direct Line said it wasn't insured for theft.

Dad just left it because the car only gets used at weekends (where it doesn't leave his sight) and during the week it's behind locked gates, with a Clifford alarm/immobiliser, a security light, and a son that stays up til the early hours of the morning, so good luck to anybody who wants to TRY and take it!

When renewal time came he decided to go with Admiral so he could have the VR and his Bora on the same policy.

It's a minor thing but like you, I found DirectLoops couldn't spell my surname correctly. I told them to cancel the policy and went elsewhere. Hassle for me maybe, but I felt so strongly that if I should make a claim, what chance would they have of getting those details right.

Just had some nice fun and games with Direct Line. Phoned them up about a month ago to accept an internet quote I got from them. The operator was very helpful and actually got the quote down even lower with a lower excess. I had the golf temporally added to my then current policy the day before the it ran out so that I could still drive to work (old policy ended and new began at midday) chose to pay the entire sum of it then (additional sum for temp cover and the entire sum for the new policy), gave her my details and thought nothing of it.

Skip to 2 weeks later and only the money for the temp cover had left my account so I phoned up and checked that everything was all right, operator told me that the money for the new policy would not leave my account until the renewal date which sounded reasonable. I also needed to fax them a copy of the alarm installation certificate which, after finding somewhere that still had a fax machine, I did. Confirmation of receipt letter comes back with my old cars reg number on it, phone them up, again, and check this and am told that this is normal as the letter is printed automatically with the reg number of the current car on the policy, and for my peace of mind the operator checks and informs that the golf will '100% definitely' be insured on a new policy from midday of the first but that the money may not leave my account and the new certificate arrive in the post until a few days afterwards.

Then yesterday I get home late and find a letter telling me that my policy has lapsed as I have not renewed it, phone them up today on my lunch to query it and I'm told I'm not insured as I've not paid the renewal, so unknown to me I've been driving around for 3 days without insurance! Should I have been involved in an accident or been stopped for a random check by the police I'd have been screwed. If I'd not needed to get home from work and they'd not been the cheapest quote I'd had by a long shot I'd had told them where to shove it but I'll be sending a letter of complaint tomorrow.
