1st Gear - DSG 'lurch'
« on: 20 October 2009, 21:32 »
Hi All

Long time no speak - what have I missed .

Anyways - got an Ed30 with a DSG box. There's quite a 'lurch' from the box if I go from having the footbrake engaged to even just tickling the gas.

Only solution is to pause for 1/2 - 1 sec from taking my foot off the brake which rather defeats the object of having a GTI I feel .

Doesn't seem as much an issue when using the handbrake.

And no - before anyone asks, this isn't in S mode.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

M

Sounds like you have one of the faulty Mechatronic units ... how old is your car ?

Mine is getting replaced next week ... same fault as yours by the sound of it.

More info here :-

There's been a full VW press release in America for this fault

Some customers have reported transmission performance issues under certain driving conditions. This was due to a faulty component inside the Mechatronic unit within a limited production range.

.... affects a limited number of model years 2007-2009 Volkswagens and Audis. Covered models are the Volkswagen R32, Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, GTI, Eos, as well as Audi A3 and TT.

I have a 2008 GTI, and I seemto hav ethe same. I may take mine in to have it looked at as well......

Is it a big job??

Will the car need to be taken on the typical '50 mile heavy footed' test drives??

Not that big a job, but quite expensive out of warranty.

Well I wondered about the test drive when I complained about mine at it's 1st service, particularly as the fault really only shows up when the gearbox is hot and I'm in stop start traffic.  In the end I wrote a letter explaining all the symptoms and asked them to confirm with VW whether my Mechatronics unit was one of the faulty batches.  I handed them the letter when dropping the car off in the mornng.  Car came back from the service with no extra mileage .. so no long test drive ... and confirmation that it needed replacing

That sounds more typical of the DSG having a slight delay in changing gear.

The symptoms of the mechatronics fault are at their worst when the gearbox is hot and you're setting off in 1st or Reverse up an incline.

There is also occasionally a very long delay in engaging 1st gear, and then a slightly alarming bang from the gearbox, as 1st gear is finally engaged.

Print off the American press release in the link above and take it with you

I'll PM you the letter I wrote too, if you want to put it in writing to the service manager.

PM sent with text

The letter was mainly to convey all the problems I was experiencing straight to the technician / mechanic  (rather than 3rd hand via the receptionist )

Also to let them know that I was well aware there was a faulty batch of mechatronic units
