Done a 60 mile round trip tonight and it cost me basically £12 for those 60 miles.

All we were doing was something like 90% motorway and the rest normal roads. Never went over 70mph as were still breaking her in.

Is this the norm then for the mk6 ? She's a thirstly little b!tch if thats the norm.

Yes..sounds about right...
and
Yes tis the Norm , well for the TFSi anyway, TSI should be better

Perhaps turn off the heated seats and switch the Aircon OFF

Heated seats and air con were not on at all for the journey.

At the 23mpg I was getting thats even lower than the Urban 28 mpg I should get. I did say around and probably more than the 90% I said was motorway which I'd class as extra urban, the figures quoted for that are 48 mpg.

That sounds right to you ? Doesnt sound right to me and I'm no mathematitian.

I think you will probably struggle to see the claimed figures, they are determined in laboratry conditions and should be viewed only to compare one car to another rather than what you will see in real life.

and as others have said your engine is brand new and will take a few thousand miles before you see its true performance.  VAG engines tend to take longer to loosen up than other manufacturers.

Upside of this is they tend to last longer and not lose as much power over the course of their life

I expect the mk6 will do better than our mk5 when run in from what i have read in the past. In general our mk5 does ~30mpg average daily and mid 30s on a gentle run. Most owners who drive more enthusiastic than us seem to be mid 20s av. Also the mk5 GTI DSG from work when i used them back to back was doing 3mpg less than the manual.
Only way imo to test mpg is brim to brim method everything else is just guess work.

How do you manage to do 450 miles to a tank, and still manage to slaughter a mk5 GTi?

Just a one off a guess  :lipsrsealed:

It was the running in period so no slaughtering. Was on a drive upto scotland so all single a-roads and alot of time being stuck behind slow traffic. I cant see it happening again... but would like to know whats the most someone can get out of a tank. It certainly wont be me as Im usually just town driving unless im going away.

Averaging below 30mpg at the moment. Although Im sure you remember when I managed 36mpg in the R32 in granny mode

You won't see claimed MPG figuires on a VAG engine until it's done between 5k and 10k miles. Our A3 2.0T Sportback will do 35mpg on a run but will only do 26mpg around town. This is lower than the book states but as has been said, the tests that are done for published MPG are in a lab on rollers. Hardly real world driving.

Oh and turning your air con off won't make hardly any difference as the GTi has Climate control so the compressor is only running when and if required...

Fuel consumption figures on a hot hatch forum are so sad!!

If you want mpg buy a sh!tty low powered diesel!

If you want a fun hot hatch with power then put up with it

And before anyone says a remapped diesel is not and never will be a fun hot hatch with the awful noise, 300rpm power band, poor weight distribution and the need for a remap (if it aint fast standard - it aint fast!)

Real world figures on MPG. I think if you register you can have MPG rather than l/100km
