Thirsty ?
« on: 18 October 2009, 00:11 »
Done a 60 mile round trip tonight and it cost me basically £12 for those 60 miles.

All we were doing was something like 90% motorway and the rest normal roads. Never went over 70mph as were still breaking her in.

Is this the norm then for the mk6 ? She's a thirstly little b!tch if thats the norm.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

The first few hundred miles will always give you abnormally high fuel consumption. After 3000km, I am averaging 35mpg which, TBH, I am slightly disappointed with, considering that I drive quite carefully. The thing I have noticed about the GTI compared to other cars how consuption increases wildly when I have a little bit of fun

But you have yours re-mapped!
You can't expect to make an additional 40 BHP and not burn fuel doing it.

GTI is like every other car...drive it like you are taking your Gran to church and you'll see late 30s MPG...but what's the point? Buy a diesel.
Drive it properly...and you'll see 20 something.
Them's the breaks...I think my Test Drive average was 20ish MPG - a figure I wouldn't expect to do much better than in normal usage, if I'm being honest.

I only get about 40 MPG out of my smelly-fuelled Fabia vRS despite everyone telling me it would do 55-60 MPG.
I would expect a GTI to deliver 20 something MPG is you use it 'properly'.

Personally i think any 200+Bhp car which gets 35mpg on average is doing very well, The two Type R civics i have had only got 29/30 mpg and the misus fiesta ST only averaged 28mpg

I average 29-30 driving generally quite 'enthusiastically). I averaged 26'ish before the remap so the map increased efficiency by about 10%.

Yes she likes a drink though Kev, plodding around can get you up to 40 but it aint no fun.....

I suppose after all the hype about the new GTI being frugal and green (170g/km) the fuel economy could be perceived to be a little disappointing... i think its more than fine, though a slightly larger tank would have been nice.

Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

Any larger fuel tank would it not weigh the car down and also make the interior slightly smaller? In any case, I travelled from The Hague to Berlin on just one tank. I think thats a testimony of how economical the GTI is...

The way FSI works makes it prone to being a bit jekyl and hyde.  If you accelerate gently and generally drive in a boring sort of way you get v good fuel economy for a 2.0T lump.  But when you press the go pedal hard it really drinks it.

Running in will mean slightly higher consumption but although its class leading for what it is, its not a car to buy with fuel economy in mind.

Tootling around town with frequent stop starts absolutely mullers fuel consumption.  I find though that long cruises are very economical (relatively speaking).  This is mk5 experience but the engine share the FSI technology aren't all that different thought the mk6 is a bit better with fuel consumption and just be thankfull you don't NEED to fill up with 99 to get the best fuel economy.

Bearing in mind I'm getting 36 mpg ish on my 60 mile round daily commute and I only ever used to get 43 from my Saab 93 150 diesel I'm more than satisfied. I think that's pretty good for a 200hp plus motor.
If I was doing a 60 mile stop and start commute then I would have seriously thought about buying the car as consumption does start to dip in those scenarios. However, it's the same old story - you takes your choice. I was really bored with diesel and it sounding like a tractor every morning (the wife still has a diesel) but I don't regret for a second the return to petrol and the inevitable extra few quid it costs a month.
