Hi all.
Hope you don't mind me popping on here and asking you fellas some questions.
The time has come for me to get myself a new car and I've decided I want a MK 4 Golf

This is where I now have a dilema so I have some questions and hopefully some of you knowledgable chaps could help me out?
Firstly, I only have 5 grand to get myself a new ride. Now I know thats not alot but I've been looking about and it seems you can pick up some decent little motors for that price.
Here's my first problem. A couple of weeks ago a friend took me out in his 1999 MK 4 GT TDI 110. I can honestly say, I was massively impressed. It's 3 door, has a sexy set of 18's on it, Silver and only 34000 miles on the clock with FVWSH. He paid 8 grand for it. Another great selling point for me was the fact that I drive 40 miles a day to work and with it being diesel, I would be saving on fuel.
Now I'm not daft and I know I won't get a car as good as his for the budget I've got but I was wondering firstly whether I have any chance of finding a 3 door GT TDI 110 in my budget?
I had a quick look on the autotrader website and it appears theres only one in the whole country currently available and that is a 5 door model. So that got me thinking. I had another quick look and found also that there are alot of MK 4 Golf's about that are TDI but not with the GTI spec. Are these cars comparable to the GT TDI version? Are there many differences and if so what are they?
The more I think about it now, 5 doors won't be so bad as I do take my kids to school a couple of times a week. So I'm now looking at 5 doors are very much an option.
Further investigation on the good ol autotrader lead me next to - MK 4 Golf GTI. What are these cars like? I would imagine, performance wise, they'd cream the TDI's? It seems like I can find myself a 5k GTI should I choose to have one of those. Are the juicey? Costly when they go wrong? More info on these would be great.
Wow, just read back through this long post of drivle

Basically in simpler terms, if you guys had 5 grand for a MK 4 Golf, what models would you knowledgable guys be looking at?
Thanks in advance for your replies and I look forward to reading them.
Kind Regards,
Cliff
