A few questions for my first post
« on: 25 September 2004, 17:15 »
Hello everbody, this is my first post and if you don't mind i'll start by picking your brains! ;D My wifes 92 Clipper cab has started to show its age and we think its time to get it sorted. Firstly the engine has started to make a ticking noise under acceleration, this has coincided with the car having very lumpy tickover especially when cold. Secondly the steering is excessively heavy and always has been since we had it, is this normal or am I just a whimp whos used to the power steering on my Renault Trafic van? And thirdly how do I get a picture on the bottom of my posts?? Despite the above probs the car is a real looker ;)

Shouldnt worry about the steering, Scott -
tiny steering wheel + wide, wide wheels = Arms like Popeye
(not sure if that would suit your wife, so better look into a power steering upgrade then!)

Welcome to the site any way, and get a few pics in the gallery so we can all see another good looking cab !

I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

hi scott,

welcome to cabs 'r' us? 8)

when did u last have the car serviced??? doesnt seem old enough to be rust in the tank but might be worth checking the fuel filler neck just in case? ;)

the steering problem is infact one of my favourite parts of driving my car, means u have to put some effort into parking and u can feel doubley proud when u land the perfect space at tesco lol? :P

the ticking noise could be pinking is it running 98ron fuel or an octane booster. or is it only when cold this could be a sticking valve lifter

Welcome

Steering can depend on what size wheels and tyre pressure you have set. I've only got 14" wheels on my cab and have changed the tyre pressure several times and it feels very light now, but it's a trail and error on tyre pressures. If you've got 15" or more size wheels then it's going to be heavy - unless you get power steering - only place I know is TSR performance, but it cost ?1,000 to get installed......!!!!

On the noise issue, it's the timing as I had this on my car, it was too advanced. I took my car into a garage and asked them to check the timing and adjust - only cost ?10 for me to have done.... worth it, car runs smoother and petrol last longer now too....

If the noise is still there at tick over it's the tappets, but you would know if that was the case, it would drive you mad all the time in the car.....

Hope this helps. :)

the timing can be correct and it will pink if the octane rating is too low ie regular unleaded

That is true.. thus why it's worth taking to someone to check.

unless youre running regular unleaded then thats why its pinking, if you knock back the timing to use regular then you will loose power
