Mk3 16V cutting out issue...
« on: 16 October 2009, 23:08 »
hey guys,

i picked up a valver from a mate about 5 month ago, since then it has been sitting in the garage doing bog all.. i went to fire it up today and it wont idle.. it will run fine as long as i keep my foot on the pedal..

He said he has replaced the usual ecu/fuel relays and cleaned the tb.. i will give the tb a clean again.. the vacuum hoses have all been replaced...

any suggestions for possible reasons why this might be occuring other than the usual tb/relays.. as i wouldnt mind trying to rule as much as possible out in one hit..

not used to working on valvers, do they run ISV's on the ABF and if so where are they located?? usual sh!t load of carb cleaner to clean them???

isv is under the the ht lead tidy tray. remove that and soak it in petrol for an hour or so to clean it properly. carb cleaner will work too but expensive cause you're gonna need lots of it. before you take it off though, remove the ht lead tray and turn your key in the ignition to the first position to liven up the electrics. then put your hand on the isv. you should be able to feel and hear it buzzing. that tells you it's in working order. no point cleaning something that don't work!

Check you're throttle body wiring aswell, my 8v had a similar issue, 3 wires were split.

well what a fun morning i have had..

Started off by cleaning the throttle body.. no better as it has already been bored out and is very clean inside... (did wonder if it was not idling because too much material had been taken off)

then i decided that because it was tapping like hell, i would pull off the rocker cover and have a look, so off came the inlet, etc etc.. checked the plugs and theres tonnes of oil down the bores.. so i think there might be an issue with the rocker cover gasket...

anyhows, threw it all back together.. it idles, rather irratically, first off it wants to die, then after about 10 secs picks up and idles ok.. a bit hunty but ok..

So then i checked out the ISV, Whipped that off, gave it a good clean with some carb cleaning after letting it soak in petrol.. no difference.. I tried unplugging the ISV and it doesnt seem to change the idle at all... it doesnt seem to buzz or feel noisy either.. so i think this might be the next thing to check...
