For the love of Golf?

why do i love my car so much , its seems we all do. I had a mk2 mk3 mk4 and now a mk5 and ive loved them all some brief affair with audi but i think all in all im def a golf man. A wise mechanic once said to me " golf's are a drivers car" and spose he was right, or he was just trying to big up the mk2 he was selling me. Ive enjoyed driving/owning all of them and cant see any let up in that (plans for mk6 purchase). Im also thinkin about puttin my mk5 in the garage do some work on it so i have a mint example of one.

The GTI is all the car you every really need - because they are affordable, well put together, quick when you need, comfy when you don't, fun to drive and practical, reliable and satisfying to own. Not shouty-look-at-me-in-your-face but not dull either... just restrained good taste. And thanks to the history both of the GTI moniker and the VW brand in general they are an enthusiasts car. Originally built by engineers not to fit into some market niche but fettled to be fast and sprightly, many have bettered it in one way or another, but few have matched its all-round ability. In a word - accomplished. Mine have been a Mk1, Mk2, Mk4 and hopefully next year a Mk6.

Same for me - and I'm not a VW fan at all! I've "fallen into" GTI ownership purely by circumstance, and share the same sentiment!

I remember Jeremy Clarkson saying about the GTI: 'It's hard, really, to think of any other car that does anything like as much, anything like as well'.

Thing is, something like a porker 911, absolutely beautiful car but pretty much all you can do with it is drive. A friend of mine has one (well actually a few friends have got either 911s or boxsters) but try to do something remotely useful in it like give the lads a lift or do a decent shop and you're stuffed. Okay - so you could have two cars, or a 911 and a Tranist  :grin:, but what's the point?

I can't believe the number of people who've said to me in the 18 months I've had my GTI that the best car they've ever had is a Golf GTI. Some of the cars these lads have had since have been pretty substantial, too.

I really like my MK5 GTi.

Unfortunately I've not fallen in love with mine. Perfect all-rounder, but just lacking something..... :undecided:

Lacks - A V6 engine (the soundtrack to go with it) and 4WD  :laugh: :laugh:
 
From me having also owned a GTI for 4 months - cracking car for sure. But for me personally just lacked a bit of character

Jimp, how long you had the Vento for? She still running well? Would love to see some pics of her posted  :smiley:

i too love my golf, i also loved my saxo diesel. the only thing i don't like about my golf is that i tend to find i get road rage more. in the saxo i knew it wasn't very fast so i just relaxed and enjoyed the leisurely pace. in the golf i know it can be quick so i find that i'm rushing around more and getting peeved at how slow people drive (mainly when i stuck behind saxo diesel drivers!)

I've had this one since late June. She's in much better shape than my last one, not a spot of rust anywhere and the engine is running sweet  :cool: Only a 1.4 petrol but no worries. Here are the most recent pictures I have from a show I brought it to in August:

I have a set of coilovers for it but no pictures. The stock suspension is on atm as my dad is using it as a run around for a while.
