Water in Footwell
« on: 24 September 2004, 15:46 »
Have had water in passenger footwell this week.

Though this may be heater matrix as i have post i small amount of coolant from expansion tank.

However, it has only had water in once and this was when i left it outside all day in the rain.

I can see where watter is dripping from. Under the glove box and to the left of/under the tray below there is a circular hole in the card lining. this appears to be wet and where the water is coming in.

Any ideas on this one would be appreciated

lift the scuttle tray under the bonnet and clean out all the muck and garbage around the drainage holes in each corner.

if the water can get down the drainage holes then it gets into the blower units and seeps into the passenger footwell

if your heater matrix has exploded you will now all about it. they dont leak, they explode!! usually filling the car full of steam and scalding your legs in the process :-\

gambit's right, had the same thing happen to my 16v. too much crap in the drainage channel and the water needs to find another way out.

clean it up and have a play with a watering can. you'll probably need to take the carpet up to take the soundproofing wadding out and dry it properly. takes weeks if you just leave it and it stinks.... ;)

I had footwell paddling pool too, passenger side.

But it was due to a poorly fitting window seal.  (Bad fitting on corner by door pull, and it was about half inch short of the end by the mirror)

I went to the scrappy and got hold of a pretty clean looking one (?2).  And although it was shorter than my one, I spliced the end of the newer one with a stanley knife and added some more from my original one with super glue.

I also bent the Aluminium seat slighty (that the seal sits on) with the palm of my hand so it had a tighter fit to the window.

No more water in there now.  But I'm thinking of taking the door card off again soon and painting the inner side of it with UPVC glue, as a sealant as an extra measure.

Also mate check your doors, take the door cards off and check the plastic cover is intact, probably not your problem as it is coming from the dash, but check it anyway, it used to pour in on my old golf although the seal around the windows was way off :)

and make sure the drain holes in the door are not blocked, should be two i think!

good luck

@ Tufty.

Maybe you could find out by getting someone to sprinkle a hose or watering can over the window first, and then the vent @ the top of the bonnet.

i wouldnt go sprinkling water over the driverside of the scuttle because if it leaks down in there then it'll drip all over the fuse box. and you'll get a few sparks, smoke and alot of burnt out fuses!!

Do what I did and stuff a Sainsburys carrier bag above the fusebox, keeps the water out untill you can figure out wher ethe leak is :D

yep my valver had the same prob. It was all in the driver's side & in the back! Ended up having to take all the soundproofing out, it had just turned into a big sponge!!  Me & my mate cleaned out the scuttle, no more probs! 8)
