A query that needs answering! 2 nuts or 3 nuts??
« on: 14 October 2009, 17:00 »
I have recently fitted spax suspension to my gti 8v and on the rear shocks there are 2 nuts that fit on top of the shock.....or so i thought!

I fitted a new oem shock to my sisters golf mk3 gti the other day and it came with 3 nuts!!

Now i am slightly worried that mine should have 3 nuts fitted to it and not 2. Can someone please clarify how many nuts are fitted on the top of a rear shock, i'm a little worried mine is not fitted correctly although i am pretty sure i only removed 2 nuts from original shock.

Has anyone got a very detailed write up on the rear shocks??

If someone can answer this i would apprciate it very much.

Hi.. on the standard rear suspension you have the nut that screws down on top of the metal sleeve to hold the spring plate and rubber in place, a rubber top mount then slides onto the sleeve then the unit is placed up into situ on the vehicle.. another collet and rubber mount fits onto the suspension end from inside the car with a nut on top, then another metal plate followed by another nut..so that's 3 nuts, 1 nut securing the spring and plate and rubber spring seat.. and 2 nuts fixing the top mounts which also secure the suspension to the vehicle..
Hope that helps.

So then why did my spax only come with 2 nuts??

Can't use the ones from the old shocks as they are different threads!

If the two nuts you have are the same i'd guess they would be the lower fixings (rubber seat/spring plate nut and top mount fixing nut)  The final nut is a locking type pretty standard thing that goes on last above the large dished washer, if that's the case then you should be able to find a suitable nut with the correct thread maybe in your local Diy or Halfords store.
