Oil and filter change
« on: 13 October 2009, 14:11 »
Hi Folks,

Doing an oil and filter change on a mates TDI at the weekend and need 2 questions answering.

1) How do you remove the oil filter? Never seen one fitted like they are on these before.

2) Is the sump plug just a standard socket or something different?

Cheers peeps,

nick

the plastic cap twisits off - oil filter strap should be able to do the job

19mm socket IIRC

Nick

it can be a bit tight but it does come off lol

just remember to replace BOTH o-rings when fitting the new filter -  there's a small one on the bottom of the plastic cap - you'll see what i mean when you remove it

you'll also want to make sure you don't tighten the sump plug too tight, as it's an ali sump, and it's very easy to strip the thread on those.

I replaced my sump plug when I did mine, but it's mixed opinions on if you need to.

Ahh nice tip! I'm used to ali sumps as my miis had them.

yeah well remembered Ridg

i remember me and the father-in-law doing the next service after VW had done an oil change.  It took me, him and a large breaker bar, laying out from under the car to crack the plug off

God knows what they put it on with!!

Right so just to make sure I know what I'm doing can you explain exactly how the filter system works. Is it attached to the plastic cap? When you undo the cap does it come up with it?

the cap has a long needle-like part connected to it and the filter slides over that

the cap and filter will come up in one piece

it really is very simple - it will be the simplest oil filter change you'll ever do
