Useable performacnce in the right gear, at the right revs, but f00k all else after that lovely slug of torque has gone.

thats what remaps are for :afro:

I had a remapped Grande Punto 1.9 MJ with about 170bhp. The power band was good, but not wide enough.

My favourite incident was an overly aggressive Civic Type R driver gesticulating for me to get out the way - assuming i'm in an athsmatic 1.2 - one stab of the throttle later and he was nowhere to be seen.

Refused to make eye-contact when he overtook me about five miles down the motorway.

i get that too - it is rather comical

Soon as diesels stop sounding like black hackney cabs then I'll give them more serious thought.

Forgot about that!

does the new GTI engine not sound like a diesel on idle then? Have they cured that particular trait?

Anyway thats good news if the GTD does get that tricky diff fitted as standard - something to look for in a few years time when the price of them is more sensible!

Drop for drop diesel has 12% more power than petrol and can easily be made to have much more power than a petrol car.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

No, it doesn't (well, mine doesn't). I know what you/they mean, though: I drove my brother-in-laws Audi TT 2.0TFSI (MkV engine) recently and that did sound like a diesel on start-up.

Good for diesel. Does it still sound like a Hackney ? Why, yes it does.

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

Drop for drop diesel has 12% more power than petrol and can easily be made to have much more power than a petrol car.

You mean 12-15% higher energy density, not power. And yes, a diesel engine is much more efficient, lasts twice as long, is simpler, blah, blah. Still inferior to a petrol engine for passenger cars though in terms of performance, weight, sound, cleanliness. And for a performance car being driven enthusiastically and enjoyed for its feedback, it's just too big a compromise. I enjoy driving cars with petrol engines; I tolerate driving cars with diesel engines.

There are some dramatic, classily styled cars out there from the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar etc which look great hunkered down on their big wheels with their curves and edges gleaming in metallic and pearl. And then the rep inside turns the key and a diesel clatters into life.
