Now man the f*ck up, get the shafts off and replace the boots before you need to replace all four CVs, cos that WILL hurt.

Guess I need to man up soon then  Drive shaft bolts are one of my nightmares.

When's the MOT?  Sounds like you need a seriously off-peak ferry return in the next few weeks.

MOT November the 24th. I honestly don't know if the car will pass or fail. Only surface thing I can see it failing on is the CV boots. Rest of the car as you know looks pretty solid from underneath, including the sills. There is now no PAS leaking, and bushes all seem fine. Suspension seems a tad used however.

As already said, replace them ASAP.
If the joints aren't knocking then you will probably get away with stripping them and cleaning them with petrol/white spirit.
You won't be able to get the shaft out of the hub without a puller on a mk3 gti/vr6, anyone that says you can tap it out, hasn't done the job.

I have and both mine came out of the hub no trouble, few wacks with a technical adjuster and they came off

+1 im doing it #atm and the gti/vr6 splined driveshaft bits are 'bonded' to the hub, according to elsawin. I welded up my own puller, just like the proper one+ thought i could get away with m10 bolt to push put the shaft, no way sheered right off, now im goining with M16, and it had better not sheer that off!
You do need 'special' splined/star bit to unbolt the inner cv from the gear box hub, i cut away the boot to get better access.
isnt too bad a job just right tools as usual, dismantle cvs and give them a good clean out, you should get a pack of grease to repack them with. refitting is reverse of removal lol

they7 might do on the lesser models, i also read that some have flattened splines for a sort of interference fit, these ones you clean + give a light oiling on replacement, the bonded ones should be cleaned+ some sealent applied, some locktight would probbo do
