insurance friendly mods for a 17yr old

hi im 17 and am driving a 1.6cl. i've already put on 'orlando' alloys from a mk3 GL and rear lenses from a gti, but i was wondering if anyone could recommend any other mods i could do without hurting the insurance. i've been trying to go for the OE+ look and was thinking of a vento front end conversion but they are increasing hard to find. any suggestions would be most hopeful.

but k+n panel filter and exhaust shouldn't hurt ya too badly!!
gti front lights also... look nicer!

A good head unit that the fascia can be removed and some nice speakers to hide under the grills.

Apart from that, leave it alone and wait for your NCB to go up, or pay the price, it is pretty shocking (usually) how much your insurance will go up even for minor things these days.

true - best get it as tidy as poss for a 1.6 - its amazing how much of reaction you'll get for a fairly standard, mint paintwork and mint condition car than a half done up one with a crappy zorst and knackered paintwork!

But did you have your own insurance, or a named driver on someone elses insurance?

These days, it wont matter if you are young and with either - insurance on a fast car is not cheap

I've always had my own insurance policy that way I'm all legal and I get my own no claims bonus.

If you're a named driver but you drive the car all the time, then that is an illegal act called 'fronting' and if found out, your insurance is 'void' and I think I saw somewhere you can get fined? So it's not really worth the risk. Unless you really are a named driver and you rarely use the car.

I'm now 19 and I can insure my VR6 fully comp for £1182 (Well I could if I hadn't lost my job )

It's all down to your insurance company at the end of the day. When I was with Kwik Fit they wanted £1000 for my 1.8 GL standard and that was the cheapest I could find at the time. When I put my BBS wheels on it they charged me £400! I did do this sadly. However 6 months down the line and I wasn't willing to pay £140 a month so I changed to Admiral on a 10 month bonus accelerator.


They charged me £960 with alloys, front and rear lights, audio, lowering and black badges and indicators. Which I thought was fair enough. Now I'm paying £650 after finishing that policy and with Adrian Flux who I'm all declared with but get like for like on my mods if I claim.


Ring up and get some quotes on what it'll cost if you do certain things, that's what I did, it gives you an idea then and what you can financially do and what you can't do.
