OIL???
« on: 11 October 2009, 20:42 »
Dealer topped up oil with Castrol Magantec 10w-40 on my GTI. Is this correct oil? Also seems to be getting through a lot of oil. 6000miles covered since last service at 23K now showin minimum on the stick.

The GTI drinks a fair bit of oil until about 10k miles by which time it settles. I used about 1 litre in total until I reached 10k, after which it hasn't moved in the last 10k.

Sorry I should have mentioned, the car had a service at 23K and now done about 32K. All motorway driving.

The correct oil I think is 5w-30.

Not sure about whether usage is abnormally high, since the GTI does drink oil anyway.

I would be very concerned as Castrol Magantec is described as "Synthetic based" and not fully synthetic.

According to TT, all VWs are now supposed to use 5W-39 fully synthetic oil with VW 504 or 507 spec.

Correct, all Castrol Magnatecs are only semi-synthetic - but they are actually better than some so-called fully synthetics (Mobil 1 springs to mind) - becuause they use Group5 esters, which are considerably better than the Group3 synthesised hydrocarbons which Mobil use.

But Magnatec still doesn't meet the VW 504.00 oil standard.

Oh, and if they topped it up with less than half a litre - that will be purfectly fine.
