SPENT A FEW HOURS LOOKING AT CHANGING CARS...
« on: 11 October 2009, 20:41 »
Because of the fact that my Mk5 is worth more than I paid for it nearly a year ago, I considered the idea of maximising this and changing cars before it starts to lose money...

Today I drove -

A Leon Cupra, a Skoda Octavia VRS and had a sit in a Mk6 GTI (demo not avail)

Well, all I can say is....Im keeping my Mk5.

The Leon was very tempting, drove nicely, although does not seem very quick for a car with 250bhp standard?
However, I just could not live with the interior - the dash looks like it was made out of melted down lego bricks - totally lets the car down I think.

The skoda was OK, but reminds me too much of a big old fashioned Jap sedan - not a sporty car which it tries to be. Also, the ride was surprisingly firm and crashy, not as composed as my Mk5 GTI.

Finally the MK6 - very nice and continues to grow on me - just one issue - its too expensive. The one I was sat in today (Speccy cars aberdeen) was white, with xenons/leather/DSG, all the bits.......but 17" alloys!!! and the price.........wait for it.............

£32000

£32000 for a white GTI with 17" wheels? What fool specced that one?

Anyway, top and bottom of it is.......Im keeping the MK5, just cant part with it. Such a fantastic car.

Agreed, I could not believe it!!!

I mean just how much could be loaded on the thing? Leather/DSGs/xenons and then things like reversing camera maybe? satnav? I was just so shocked to be sat in a £32000 Golf with 17" alloys!!!

No doubting there is going to be a hell of alot of poor spec mk6's around, and rare as hens teeth High spec ones later on.

Anything over 30k is way too much to be paying for a family Hatchback!!!

Ive just been on the VW configurator...

Adding leather/satnav/dsg/xenons/extra airbags/park assist/tyre flat indicator/handbrake hold - basically all extras excluding 18s and metallic paint comes to...

£32700

Jesus christ, thats too much for a small family hatch.

However good a car the Mk6 GTI is, there are two things stopping me upgrading to it:

1. Price - it must be a good 20% more expensive than the Mk5 was.
2. It is not a true new model.  I'd rather wait for the MK7 as that will be a new model.

The Mk6 is just too similar to the Mk5 and too expensive for me to upgrade to.

I don't understand VW's pricing on the new GTI.  It's cheaper to manufacture yet more expensive to buy.  Exchange rates can have an effect on pricing but surely not this much.

It's fairly obvious:

low cost + high price = mega profits.

The mk6 is all about profits.

Never really got around to speccing up a mkvi, but £32k+ for a "christmas tree" GTI isn't my idea of a bargain for a MK5.5
