Just bught car what you reccommend i do as service
« on: 11 October 2009, 08:10 »
hi all.

newbie to the forum. introduced myself last night.

i am just about to service my 97 2.0 GTi 8v.

just bought the car last week. 130k on the clock but has been used and not abused.

i have bought myself an engine flush, oil air & Fuel filter and set of plugs and some nice fresh oil.

yesterday i was having problems when idiling especially when just started and choke has gone off. thought this was an Air flow meter, and changed this, still doesnt seem to be any different. i have had to revert to simply have the car running slightly higher on idling as from yesterday.
i was reading the sticky on the forum for common faults, so i am unsure of what to go for next.

i am wanting to clean all oil breather pipes today when servicing but i am a novice mechanic and i want to know is this a straight forward job? and if you can recommend anything else to do while i am at it today?

any help / guide links appreciated. thanks

Where you're unsure mate it's always good to either have someone on hand who does know what they're doing, or take it to a garage, I've ballsed up too many times!

However cleaning the breather pipes is easy, get yourself some air intake/carb cleaner from Halfords to clean them with, also clean the throttle body, as the oil vapour which leaves the breather pipes goes into there.

Check for air leaks via split hoses etc, also be worth having the throttle off and giving the internals, around the blade a good clean up... either use carb cleaner or fuel..

Hi, welcome to the site, don't forget your air filter too and do you know when the cam belt was last changed?

As said already - clean throttle body and check for air leake - both of these are the most likely culprits for rough idle.

oh yes, Driving like a dream now.

1st things done were oil air & fuel filter, a set of plugs, and some nice fresh oil,

car still idiling quote bad so then checked oil breather pipes, they were gunked up,  cleaned these and still no difference, but as soon as i cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner the car started to run well.

belt looks fine although i have no record of last change,

when i took it a drive i noticed a groaning / whining / grinding noise coming from what seemed to be the front NS wheel.

i thought this was wheel bearing and checked this but sems fine, this is only happening when i am up around 5000 revs.

anyone any ideas?

thanks

Now Crying, Failed Mot badly..
just went today and booked my annual mot test. the 1st i have done on the car, as i just got it.
needed to get 4 new tyres, new back box & wheel alaignment was done aswell. fair enough all needed,

took the car to MOT, Failed Miserably. so now for a rant.

Both sills completely rusted to the point where need replaced, the car doesnt look that bad, must have got a sticky mot tester, rear brakes failed by 2% and have to replace these, rear brake lines need replaced.

huh, just wneh you think things are going good, now i need some help for the repair of the sills.

any advice recommended.,.

thanks
