ABF/ KR/ 2Y Clutch Slippage
« on: 10 October 2009, 17:26 »
I am about to change my engine from 16v Kr to ABF in next few weeks.

Going to keep the mk2 16v 2Y(?) original gearbox to save on faff of changing to hydrualic/ pedal box etc out of mk3

Now from what I can gather reading other threads you match the clutch to the G/box which would mean that I get a mk2 clutch(?)

Need to replace my current one as after less than 1k on on a techniclutch "fastroad" it's slipping like an absolute pig again. From what I can gather techniclutches are made from chocolate but I got it free with the car when I bought it...Only found this out once it was fitted

Thinking about getting a sachs clutch but any suggestions or recommendations for a new clutch? Not going to be going nuts with conversion, changing over to EFI, filter, 4 branch, decent exhaust.... No crazy power.... For now...

Also going to take my brave pills and have a bash at fitting it myself as now fitted my own coilovers!! With a little help from Fat Boab

Any help/suggestions gratefully recieved. Oh and not wanting to spend 300.00 on a clutch either.

yep use the mk2 clutch and flywheel and the sachs one should be fine with your setup

Cheers for that. Will check out my local motofactor

Going to look over my haynes manual and see what I need for changing clutch.

Fingers crossed....

Anyone know of a reason why my clutch would start slipping after 1-2k? there isn't any adjustment to make is there? Has a self adjusting cable.

Just when I bought the car it had a slipping clutch and the one removed was proper knackered, wouldn't have somehow damaged it causing car rto wear out a clutch quicker?

69.00 quid plus the VAT for an OEM clutch. Thinking I might need to bite the bullet and get my pet grease monkey to change it for me as I'm installing a (another) bathroom this week and I am back at work on monday

69.00 quid plus the VAT plus fitting for an OEM clutch sound about right?

self adjusting cabel is the problem it overadjusted and ether buggerd or in process of buggering the clutch
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Cheers for the knowledge DP... Will have a look...

Just so happens I may have one lurking in the cupboard, a self adjusting clutch cable I hasten to add...
Will see if I can fit that as that's a whole lot less ball ache/ expense than changing a clutch.

That's my friday night taken care of then....

Went and had a look at this today, according to Haynes manuel, it's fine. Pump pedal 5 times then if you can still push the release arm down, it's ok. (?) Did this today and can still push arm down a couple of times then goes tight. Is it the self adjuster that's knackered?
As mentioned clutch has only done 1-2k at most since being fitted.

it may be the damage is allready done then.     was a new cabel fitted when you had the clutch fitted ?  if not the cabel may have been happily over adjusting causeing reduced clamping pressure on the friction disk but now the friction disk may have worn more than the adjustement in the cabel hence the play returns

I don't honestly know if cable was changed at the time, obviously the person who did it would be on holiday, hopefully back tomorrow so I can ask. Reckon I'd have a comeback as he's a proffesional mech' and was done at the shop through the books? SHould it be done at the time?
Would be great if the car could go a week without breaking

Fook me was it October that this whole crap storm started?

Had a loan of a car in the interim nut need to get my finger out and get this sorted.

Found out that guy who changed my clutch didn't change the cable at the time as he was "trying to save me money", WTF!?! Why would I cheap out on an 8.00 cable when spending 120.00 fitting a clutch? Basically the geezer doesn't want to know. He also left the speedo cable grommet out so 'box dribbled fluid all over the drive. All this from a guy I've taken my cars to for 10yrs, so much for loyalty eh? He's said he would call me back and call me back etc so going to get it sorted elsewhere as I just want my car to work FFS.
