Epic.

If you paint the front of your house, maybe put an extension on it and rejig the kitchen, maybe move some internal walls ... its still the same house?

I don't understand whats so hard to comprehend about the fact that the mk5 and mk6 share a lot of parts, the same platform which is what defines to a great extent the dimensions of the car and its handling.

No one is saying they are identical.  The Mk6 is a revised and for the most part impoved evolution of the mk5.  But strip back the body skin and the plastics of the interior and you have, essentially, the same car.

Most of the engines in the Mk6 line up are identical to those in the mk5 line up.  In fact the very very latest mk5 GTI's have the same engine as the mk6 GTI as it was released in the Mk5's lifetime.  Mechanically I would say the biggest difference is the mag shocks used in models with ACC but thats a bolt on component that if someone had the inclination to do it could be retrofitted to the Mk5 (same platform (PQ35) after all....).  Bit of a bugger with the necessary control systems etc but most likely doable.

Only GTI I know of that has the MK6 engine is the ED30. We should be talking straight mk5 GTi and mk6 GTi differences.

I'll assume most of this.

We both have 2 eyes, 10 fingers and toes, 2 arms and legs yet are we the same as girls ? Assuming I'm talking to a bloke here.

Wrong.  The ED30 engine is completely different to the MK6 GTI engine (but is planned for the Golf R with some tweaks).

I am talking about the GTI, the very latest ones made in the last year of production, and only the last couple of hundred to roll off the production line at that, have the same engine as the MK6 GTI.  The point being that the engine doesn't make the car.

Ahh so the latest mk5's have the new EA888 engine ? With 210 hp and 280 torque ? Cool, you learn something new every day.

Yes the very last Mk5's to roll off the line had EA888 engines but I'm not sure of their state of tune.  Most likely the same as the MK6 but I'm not sure.  I am litterally talking about the last lot to be manufactured - there aren't many of these about at all.

The vast majority of the Mk5's had the EA113 lump in some form of another.  ED30 engine is still the EA113 family but there were tweaks to that like a bigger turbo and various other bits - essentially the same but different. We could have a 12 page debate on that too

Just an aside: they aren't actually the same technology as the Audi magneto-rheological dampers. VW use Tenneco's electro-mechanical adjustable valving, developed by Ohlins Racing.

No probs, one request though, when your going back to the mk2 section, could you take Julie with you ?

I won't be going back to just the MKII section or infact stop posting in this section as I use all sections of this site and Jules can go where he likes.

You're welocme to use the rest of the site as well, you might be surprised at what you can enjoy.

I didn't mean the other MK sections, but there's a VW related area, a chat nonsense area, a photogrpahy area, a projects area, the classfieds, events etc etc.

I hope the mk7 isn't going to be 2011, it seems a bit much to change the model after 2/3 years, what about all of the design and machining costs? Not to mention the fact that customers (me included) will soon get fed up if they go to a 3 year cycle.

What about the new Polo, are they changing that as well?
Mk7 GTI. DBP, DCC, Winter pack. Mine since new, July 2013.

Very little retooling or R&D done on the MK6 as it's just a facelift of the mk5. They wanted to bring the MK6 forward but were unable to do so they therefore improved and remodelled the mk5 to keep it freah before bringing the Mk6 (now MK7) in on schedule in 2011/12.

It's very common for a car to be facelifted mid cycle to keep it fresh. Ford did it with the MKII Focus not long ago.
