Gti roof aerial
« on: 05 October 2009, 21:42 »
Hi all

Just registered on here as seemed like good resource site, anyway am after a MKV golf gti, and after looking at a few, noticed some have roof aerial and some don't, wondered if i did get one with bee-sting roof aerial, it is easy to get stubby aerial for it instead, as i need it to clear my garage..!

Thanks in advance...

Yes the aerial is easy to change to a shorter one...

I have an ED30 with one of those long-ass 14" antennae.

I would sometimes catch when reversing into the garage and you could hear it 'twang' but it never caused problems with the signal. I later swapped it for a citroen stubby antenna that was a bout three inches long. Simply unscrew the original and screw in the replacement.

The stubby one isn't a perfect fit as shown by the pics:

Stubby antenna

Others have bought different stubby antenna, some of which are better fits.

IIRC, the MY05 cars never had external antennae as they were hidden in the windscreen or something, but apparently there was poor signals for the GPS.

My05 had the aerial in the rear window. It was removed as part of the cost cutting exercise to make the car cheaper to make. A few ££ here and there makes a big difference on high production cars.

^^ Mine has it in the rear window and the reception is perfect.  IIRC the cars with factory satnav (even the MY04/5) had a sharkfin for GPS.

This is 100% correct. Purely cost reduction. There was never an issue with reception with the aerial built into the window on the 04 MKs, I had an 04 GT TDI and it was perfect reception. Just one way to cut costs, thats all it was.

Thanks for all ur replies, thats good at least i know i can get smaller aerial, just in case i do get one that has a roof aerial, s'pose worse case would be to get out and unscrew the aerial before i reverse into the garage, but that would slightly defeat the point of having automated doors.. :nerd:

If you look at my sig pic, I have the VW stubby one, I got it off ebay. Its only about 3 inches long. I am sure that will do your job fine.
