A few problems
« on: 22 September 2004, 09:45 »
Lo all,

I seem to have some problems with the cab  :(

1. I am having trouble starting it, I think it is the starter motor but, when I try and turn the car over it just clicks and I lose all settings on my radio. It's as if the battery is losing memory. If I leave the key turned and apply the accelarator, it starts after about 20 secs!!

2. I think the clutch is slipping, when in 3rd or 4th and I try to accelerate hard, the revs shoot up but not the speed, how much am I looking to get that sorted?

3. Tapping noise, my god this is annoying!!! When I start it up it is at it's loudest, once I have been going for 20 mins it is ok but then if I stop in traffic, it sounds like a tank. I take it this will be my tappets? Are these cheap to replace?

4. Since the problem with 1. The MFA has decided to not work now and the clock isn't working either, just lots of random numbers on the display, any idea what would have caused this?

All help, ideas, pointers, etc... would be greatly appreciated  :D

Cheers
Allan

1. sounds like you could do with a new battery.

2. Mine does this when anyone else drives it, but never when I drive it. A clutch isnt too much, but the labour invloved could be costly. Try and find a friend who can help and you should just end up paying for the clutch and a few beers!

4. see 1.

Hope that help a little

Helps greatly Adam, I was thinking it would be the battery, i'll pop out and get one at lunch time.

The problem with the clutch is I am utterly useless with cars! Mind you, i've never even tried  :) Put a motorbike in front of me and i've no probs getting to grips with them, cars scare me a little  :o

If you have an electric roof, or run a lot of ICE,it would be worth buying a heavy duty battery, as there is considerable drain on it from these. I bought one from Halfords recently that came with a 5 year warranty, as I have got through 2 in 2 years! The winters up here are fairly harsh on batteries, the golf isnt my only car I have had to replace a battery on after winter!

I agree with Adam about your battery. A good way to check is to put your lights on whilst starting. If they dim or go out then the battery charge is low. You don't need to do that as your battery is so bad that everything else is cutting out. I assume once its started everything like lights etc. run fine...........which means the alternator is charging ok.

Noisy tappets on start up is common, however it can be made worse by fitting a non genuine oil filter. The genuine one has a non return valve in it that prevents all the oil from draining out of the head back into the sump.
Also, if your oil level gets very low the first indication will be noisy tappets.

I have replaced the battery for a heavy duty one, problems 1 and 4 solved  ;D

However, I found out last night that I am going to be a dad, again  :o and now have to part company with the car for something bigger (this will be my 2nd). Ebay have free listing day today, so it is now up for sale on there. I feel like crying  :'(
