Gearbox crunching.
« on: 20 July 2003, 21:22 »
I have a '90 GTi 8v with 94K on the clock. When it's cold, if I change normally from 1st to 2nd gear it crunches. If I change slowly, waiting briefly in neutral, it doesn't crunch. Also, when it's warmed up, it doesn't crunch, and it doesn't when changing from 3rd to 2nd.

I've topped up the gearbox with oil. Does anyone know if this is a common problem? I don't know if it's the gearbox that's faulty, or if it's possible that it could have a lazy clutch?

Any advice appreciated. ???

Yep I agree too, the gearbox I have recently fitted to my Cabrio is doing exactly the same. Fortunately I have a spare box courtesy of 'Old_Boy'.

Is it possible to fix the synchromesh..........especially as I have another gearbox that is totally f*****d, apart from the fact that the synchromesh was OK in second.

Not sure about fixing the syncromesh Rich. Might be worth having a chat to a gearbox specialist, see if they say its possible?

Hmmm, when I get a minute I'll have a scan through my workshop manual and see what it says. I know it does cover splitting the gearbox down but I'm not sure how far I can get without the need for specialist tools. I'll probably have a go at my totally knackered one first so it doesn't matter if everything springs out everywhere.  :-\
I was only going to chuck it anyway.........might just learn something.

I don't think it will hurt to pull my broken one apart and have a look. I'm an engineer by trade so I'm afraid curiosity is GOING to get the better of me. Just hope to learn something in the process........even if it is to take your advice and don't touch it in the first place ;)

The gearbox is really bad.......when I bought the car I was told it was sh@gged and they weren't wrong. I drained the oil and it came out REALLY thick and grey in colour. As more drained out, bits of metal started dropping out! Now that its drained, I can look into the drain hole and see the diff. It has loads of chunks of metal missing from it.

The point is, I don't think I have anything to lose by pulling this box apart. Rest assured 'Justins145bhpMK1', if I do learn anything that will help others here, I'll pass it on.  :)

Well I reckon I'll try the synthetic oil to start with. Mind u, I am also tempted to pull my gearbox apart and have a go. Let us know Rich when you've done yours, you could put me off this idea!
