How to tell if your car has been cammed
« on: 04 October 2009, 12:04 »
Hi guys,

I got my gti 16V almost a month ago now. The guy that sold it to me listed the car as "Full Service History" and told me it had a FSH over the phone to me and everything. Well yeah, right

Anyway, this car has had 10 owners, i am its 11th. Yet i have had it thoroughly checked over by my local garage and they said its one of the best condition valvers they've seen, as they said to me 8v's tend to be much more reliable(? don't know if thats true or they were just trying to joke with me lol). So stuff like the full exhaust, induction kit, recaros and hella angel eyes aren't on the service history

So my question anyway. My car seems to have a really lumpy idle, but the engines in good nick. And it really, really pulls after 4500rpm. I mean i almost think it could just about keep up with my last car (300hp saab, estate though=heavy) and it pulls hard even from 6000 to the 7000rpm redline. Its faster than one of my friends fiesta STs with a full milltek and induction kit that'll prob be sitting at about 170bhp.

So do you think its been cammed, or are 16v's just ace? What else are tell tale signs/how else could i find out?

Thanks a lot guys

Lumpy Idle, Good top end, could be symptoms of a different cam?
