What engine fits ?
« on: 03 October 2009, 02:09 »
Is there a list of engines to fit the mk3's anywhere, mine has just popped, not sure why but i am gutted, its currently the 74hp 1.8 could do with something a bit more powerful but nothing as an insurance killer, any recommendations?

Cheers,
Ryan

Not a lot to be honest, to fit a 2.0 is a lot of work and will not be easy to insure.

For the price of an engine and labour to fit it, you may aswell buy another golf and break yours!!! Just buy a 2.0! Lol sorry to hear about the engine though!

Exactly my thoughts...

My thoughts are, the rad. cracked at some point, (it was leaking and i had low water so was going home to top up... booked in for a fix on monday) dropping the entire coolant. it then went to overheat but i clocked it... JUST. 110deg.C water temp, so i stopped, and the bonnet was steaming i let it cool for 25 mins, then went on my way. about 100m from my house doing 20mph uphill in 2nd (my clutch is gone which rules out anyone thinking i rag it) and all of a sudden severe tapping from the engine... it sounds worse than a diesel now...

I have had the worst last 2 months of my life..

£500 to get through mot, an upcoming clutch and rad change which is £400 (at least im saved that)... and now a write off... if anyone wants some BRAND NEW brake lines, a brand new offside read drum, pistons (entire worksing basically), a brand new offside rear shocker, and anything else pls give us a txt. 07540574204

If I remember correctly you're the dude with the 1.8 SE. If so, your 1.8 engine will be 90bhp not 74bhp. My 1.6 CL is supposed to be 75bhp from factory :smiley:

I used to have an SE and it was an awesome car, if I'd kept it then I'd have dropped a bigger engine in it because the shell was mint and it already looked like a GTI.

If you're happy with your car and want to take on an engine conversion then I say go for it, don't let others put you off.

I guess it depends really on how mint your car is. Mint Mk3's are getting quite rare now and there's a lot of rot boxes out there.

Personally if I'd just spent 500 quid on my car then I wouldn't give up on it.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do :)
Gone but not forgotten;

well said, ive had my mk3 driver for only 6 months and some dont like the fact it was a 1.8 spi, i didnt care and swapped the enjine etc over from a doner car and havnt looked back, the car has never been welded and exterior wise it only needs the boot repainting and some rust repairing that was under the gti arches that ive taken off, iff you love the car and an enjine transplant is the route you want to go down then go for it, i did and yes it was a lot of work but worth every minute, good luck with it :smiley:
