Well after 10 years of running Fords, I now have 2 GTi's sat outside :-)

The '95 8V (130K) has an MOT but drives pants (baggy suspension, clonk from front RHS when braking - guessing engine mount or anti-roll bar bushings?). The '97 16V (100K) drove great, much better than I thought a 12 year old car should, but the floor pan and both sills have rusted shockingly and it badly failed the MOT.

Thinking about swapping all the decent 16V bits to the 8V, starting with the suspension BUT: I'm confused by the differences between them. The GSF website lists different dampers & wishbones for each GTi, however from reading around, I get the impression all 5 stud GTi's have the same suspension? If that's correct why do GSF list so many different parts? My 16V sits about 15mm lower than the 8V but I guess it could have aftermarket shocks fitted.

Like to get hold of VW part numbers so I can work out exactly what's different between the 8V & 16V cars. Please can someone tell me where I can find part no's ? Do I need to buy ELSAwin? Not really sure what the software does.

Cheers,

Ian

No difference in suspension between 8v and 16v all GTI's and VR6's were fitted wih the plus set up, VR6 is heavier duty front set up to cope with the heavier engine.

To be honest the standard suspension is crap and at 100k might as well be scrapped.

Welcome to the site btw.

will be aftermarket shocks as the only differnce between all gti standard setups was early 8v and fatter spring plates thats it.

8v and 16v is all the same suspension wise...just check the fronts (upto 94ish) as these had 80mm spring pigtails while laters got 65mm (vr6 is the same up til mid 93!)
