Oil Filter HSG Front Plate - HELP....
« on: 20 July 2003, 14:40 »
My Mk1 GTI has a little plate above the oil filter I have been reciently been told its called a "Oil filter Housing front plate".  It is leaking like a B******...  I took it off cos I had a little leak, couldnt get the parts from GSF so decided to replaced the bolts holding it on.  Reaplced them and put some Gaskit gel stuff on too just for good measure.  As soon as I thought I'd done it I started my engine and it poured out like water from a kettle, tried a number of times to no avail...  can anyone help with this, am I doing something wrong as the screws dont seem to tighten nicely, the stretch if I do it up too tight and I have broken a few in there in my efforts... Seems to be coming from the top of the plate, please someone help... Does anybody have the same bit on their car???  Its a campaign if that helps...
Race ya...

Hi Marcus,
Another option would be to use the later type oil cooler as I have on my cabrio and Ben has on his Mk2, especially as you have all those Mk2 spares kicking around. It will be the cheapest and easiest way..........and it'll save you having to replace that oil cooler matrix WHEN that goes in the future.

I have exactly the same problems on mine ('83 DX Engine). Having removed the plate, I revealed a recessed 'pear shaped' oil seal that obviously wasn't doing its job. Despite using the gel gasket sealant and initially solving the problem, the oil has started weeping again. I reckon we just need a replacement but reckon sourcing one will prove tricky. Anyone know where we can get one from ? ::)

Marcus managed to get a replacement plate and seal from VW. Wasn't too expensive either. If you're lucky he might still have the part numbers handy.
