Newbie Help !!!!!!!!!! (bone question alert)
« on: 29 September 2009, 15:41 »
Hello all in the Mk3 section !!!!!!!!!!

Well I'm into the second day of Mk3 Gti ownership, day one was excellent but today I've come across a slight problem . What i thought was my wheels  catching on the brake caliper  has now turned into what looks like a goosed front wheel bearing. Basically I've just jacked up the car and the bearing feels as slack as your dad and also makes a horrible grinding/crunching noise , i'm pretty sure its not the CV joint side.
Ive only driven it about 60 miles since picking it up yesterday but I've a feeling the car may have been sat for a while beforehand which cold be the cause of the bearing ??

Does anybody have any top tips for doing the front bearings and anything else I should be looking for whilst I'm at it ,also I take it everyone uses GSF and Euro car parts for spares.

thanks in advance, and look forward to catching up with a few of you or generally talking S*** on the forum

Paul

bearings unlikely to go from being standing! but new one's are cheap enough, just check the bearing is a fairly tight fit when fitting into the hub (which i would advise using a press to fit into the hub)

Yea definetly need to take the hub to a garage with a press. no guarentee you will get the track rod end off without damaging it too.

Panic over !!!! Problem  solved  had a quiet night in work this evening so decided to pull the car in. The offending item was the hub nut of all things  Looks like the last cowboy who changed the bearings (recent receipts) had used a mars bar for a torque wrench . Quick blast of the impact driver and good as new, well that is apart from a couple of chips of my caliper.

cheers
