Couple of questions
« on: 28 September 2009, 17:32 »
Hi,

My bro picked himself up a lovely mk3 1.8GL.  First car like.  He got a real nice motor apart from a couple of odd things I hope you'se all can help me with :-
1) Windows open / close from the drivers door lock?  He can avoid it by locking / unlocking real quick but what's that all about?
2) Indicator units in bumper appears to be false?  He took the lens off and there was nothing behind it, no bulbs or anything?
3) Ref the above all apart from the drivers window doesn't work at all, just makes a motor spinning sound.  Switch is good then, has window fell off or something?

Sorry for the dodgy descriptions but he told me all this over the phone.

He's buying some Lenso BSXs and basic coilovers this week.  Getting his mod on while he learns to drive!

Hi Mate

The windows opening and closing off the drivers side door lock is a feature of the Mark 3 Golf. It is called full closure and would also work off the remote fob if it had one. It is meant to do that.
The inserts in the bumper are supposed to be the indicators on the outside edges and then yours will have two blanking plates. Behind one of these will be the front towing eye. On the GTi model the inside blanking plates were replaced with front fog lights. You could find some of these on here cheap and they look miles better. Again a cheap mod but if you buy some you will also need the wiring loom for these.
As for the window not working you will need to remove the panel and this could either be that the window glass has come off the rails or the wire could be broken. Either way should be easy to spot with the panel off and again the complete mechanism can be purchased cheap enough off here.

Hope this helps and welcome to the site.

Deano

Cheers mate,

I'll get back to the wee man with this info.  I'm sure none of it is beyond him and having a good play around will help.  Not forgetting a read of his nice new Haynes!

He wasn't very clear on the phone about it all soz:  What you are saying about the front indicator then, it is there, it's just the clear lens part (which is a foglight on a GTi) on GL will have the towing eye behind it then?

Much appreciated!

Hi Mate

If you look at the picture of mine at the bottom of this message you will see that there are three plates. The outer one is indicator, the middle one is blank and the inner one is fog light (this should be blank on yours). I think the towing eye is behind the passenger side plate.

Cheers      Deano
