Then again hands free should be banned as well IMO

i agree 100%.  no phone call is that important that you have to take it while driving.  its a complete distraction to the driver even with hands free.

The next thing you'll be saying is that passenger converstations should be banned!
TBH I barely use my phone and rarely ever take a call when driving.  I've been using fitted bluetooth hands free systems for over 5 years now, and don't find having a telephone conversation distracting in the slightest...  Certainly no more than speaking to my mate or missus in the seat next to me!

I'll be getting a Fiscon when I get my car... and even though I use it 10 times a year, its more for the piece of mind that I CAN answer my phone legally and without any hassle than anything else.  OK, its £300... but I'm sure when I change car, I can eBay it or something.

I would say that im on the phone 50% of the time i am in the car, and I dont think it affects my driving. If you feel it affects yours then your a ghey driver (and probably dsg ).

Its probably more dangerous checking out other driver/pedestrian of the opposite sex! Someone ran into the back of my car after admitting to looking at a female jogger !

I was planning to get a Fiscon for my car which will arrive sometime in october. I might play safe after reading this thread and get the VW Blueconnect!

Sorry, but the standard of driving these days is shocking, not helped by all the knobs and buttons the car companies have conned us into 'needing' over the years.  Men , sadly, cannot concentrate on more than one thing at a time and using a mobile, playing with the cruise control, heated seats, radio/ipod are all increasing your risk.

Go to Germany or Austria, or even France and you will see a much better standard of driving , especially with lane discipline on multi lane roads.  <1% of drivers in the UK take additional driving tuition after passing their test - when was the last time you did ?  Whats your hazard awareness like ??

My company has removed all handsfree from its 1000+ cars as mobile use got to such a high level that it was deemed irresponsible on safety.

No matter what the rules , people will always flout them :(

dsg?!  wash your mouth out!  i am manual all the way!  and by definition, if you are on the phone you cannot be concentrating 100% on driving as part of your brain is concentrating on talking.  i'm not saying all drivers can't cope with talking and driving but i would imagine given the standard of driving these days that banning phones all together would reduce accident levels.

Playing devils advocate here but what would the difference be to using a phone via bluetooth and listening to a talk show on the radio, something that you are interested in and debating out loud?

you are using different parts of your brain. talking to someone uses more brain power and deeper concentration.

(i've just made that up, utter tosh )

Utter tosh but sounds logical
Suppose if someone / something jumped out in front of you, you could instantly cut off from the radio whereas if you were in a conversation, its not natural just to stop dead from talking and concentrate 100% on what has just happened.

I disagree 100% that being on the phone makes you less aware.

A lot of drivers drive the same journey to work on 'autopilot' as they're doing the same monotonous thing every time. When i'm having a conversation I am more alert and concentrating more than when i'm listening to the radio which can lull you into a false sense of security.

However, getting back on topic, one person seems t be having an issue with their Fiscon, everyone else rates it highly.
