Immobiliser and key question

Hey folks,
  Im currently changing the wiring loom on my golf from a 8v to 16v and i will also be changing the ecu so therefore that means i need to match the immobiliser to it (which i have) and then i also have the ignition barrel with the one key with the chip in it to match the immobiliser, think that made sense anyway.

  So to cut a long story short, could i keep the existing ignition barrell that i have on my car and change the immobiliser for the new one and just tape the new key to the new immobiliser and the car still work using my old keys?

the reason i want to do this is because

a) i have two keys for my existing ignition barrell and only 1 for the new one
b) it will save me changing the ignition barrell

Im hoping to change everything over today so if anyone could get back to me on this then it will be great thanks.

It should work but would be better to replace the ign. barrel.

Not sure, I believe it can be done with Vagcom etc.

Keep ignition barrel and swap the chips over in the keys? Maybe just need a chip for the second key.
Would advise against strapping a key or chip to the receiver. Will probably invalidate any insurance, and makes it much easier to steal the car as you only have to turn the barrel to start it.

Most key cutting places can clone a key chip. A mk3 key cost me £35-40 I think it was.

if you keep the matched key and transponder box together from the old car, you can use vag-com to match it to the new ecu.  what you cant do with vag-com is match new keys to an old transponder box (unless you have the proper SKC code that VW supplied from new)

alternatively you can pop the chip out of the new key and fit it to your old one, or just tape the key inside the transponder ring from the 16v and chuck it behind the dash. or get a non-imobilised ECU
