Have the brakes on my GTi saved my life?
« on: 24 September 2009, 18:53 »
M62 merging onto the M18 this morning. I'm in outside lane. Lorries inside me in lanes 1 and 2. One swipes a Clio from the inside. Clio spins sideways from lane 1, accross 2 and appears from behind a lorry in lane 2 into my lane 3 and hits the crash barrier backwards.
I've got the length of a lorry or so to stop hitting the Clio in the passenger side which I managed to do with about 3 metres to spare.
Despite running over the debris from the wrecked Clio and running into the grass next to the crash barrier the car seems to have survived unscathed. Not even a puncture. My underpants didn't survive though, so to speak!!!! Even then, I was waiting for the inevitable crash as someone hit me from behind but luckily that didn't come.
Are the GTi's brakes uprated over normal cars' brakes? Even if they aren't they've probably saved me a major smash this morning, if not worse. And I must say I'd have been pretty p***ed off if I'd totalled the car after only 2 months.
The poor lad in the Clio was unhurt by the way - looked very ill though from the shock though. I've driven all the way home tonight at 70mph dead on. It might take a while to get back to driving the car as it should be driven after the shock of this. At least I'm getting 39mpg!!!!!

Dude, glad to hear you and the other driver are ok. Sounds like it could have been a lot lot worse.

In terms of the brakes, I do find them pretty grabby, ie not a lot of slack on the pedal before they bite. I thought it was a bad thing, but hearing this, sounds like a life saver.

Likely also that you had v good reactions and were paying attention.

Ps what tyres are you on?

Phew, a close one! Glad everyone and the Golf is okay!

The GTI has a system that increases the braking pressure and maximises the ABS effect when it detects an emergency situation. I think it must work.

And switches on the hazards if it detects emergency braking.

Glad you didnt get involved and the clio driver was ok

I travel on the 62 every morning and most of the jams are cased by tw#t lorry drivers.
