Slow punctures due to alloys corroded
« on: 23 September 2009, 16:11 »
Hello all

some advice please, i've bought my mk3 gti anni and the wheels were corroded, i've managed to source some refurbished ones on ebay which looked perfect, however, on getting my wheels switched the garage have said although the wheel faces were refurbished the inner rims were not which means the tyres are leaking air. is there anything i can do as it is not ideal having to keep pumping my tyres up every 5 mins or are my lovely new wheels useless???

Gutted, Leroy.

tyres off, wire brush attatchment on a drill or sandpaper and clean up the inside of the rims

Not useless should be sorted with a prime and a paint. Joys of buyin off the 'bay i suppose.

Ummm so everybody has tyre pulling equipment in their garage?
So not that easy!

Assuming he wants or needs to drive car it will mean putting the spare on, driving to a tyre fitters and have the tyre removed, take home and do as suggested!
Repeat four times!

Numpties!

tyreweld is only intended as a temporary puncture repair to 'get you home' and it makes a right mess

i had this problem quite a few years back and the only permanent solution was to do as sharpie, wayne and neo have suggested

Charmed.

You could do it that way I suppose. Or you could put your old set on and get to work on your wheels, if the tyres are shot then let them down and take an angle grinder to them wip them off, saves a few quid.
Failing that go to your local non franchised tyre dealer, ask him/her to take them off for you and that you'll be back to get them put back on and balanced up.

I did that in the past and ended up costing me 40.00 for 5 wheels

your local friendly tyre place should remove the tyres, clean up the inside edges and refit for a small fee (ask around and see who wants some beer money..all my local's like a bit of extra work  :lipsrsealed:)
