my first track day
« on: 20 September 2009, 18:50 »
Hi All been very busy with my car , got my first track day booked , a couple of questions if possible

1) I'm driving the car down , with my new tyres on , basically the car is a track car not a daily driver or anything  , the tyres are toyo tr1s could not afford hancook tyres or what ever you call them , also could only afford six of them but my dilema is i have 4 wheels that are on my car which are bbs alloys with the new tyres on them and have two spare tyres but i don't have any more alloys to put on them , do you think my new tyres will be ok for the first day and i will be swapping the front tyres with the back tyres after 1 the first day , or should i just buy a steel wheel and take one with me

2) what gear do you take with you ie tools oil etc

Many thanks in advance sorry if i sound like a tool , just really anxious of what to take and what to do also, but very excited

i have a mk 2 16 v gti mods so far

roll cage
4 point harness x 2
2 x bucket seats
2 x bucket seats mounts
new radiator
goodrich brake hoses
fully striped out
uprated brakes
fully adjustable coilovers
scorpion exhaust (was on the car when i bought it)
fully painted inside
net to carry my helmet

You should be ok unless you get a puncture.

Toyo T1R's are good in the dry and very good in the wet. You may find greater wear on new tyres initially but they will last the day no problem (providing your alignment is ok)

To be safe its always nice to have a spare set of wheels which can be picked up very cheaply secondhand. You could almost guarantee if you have one spare wheel with a directionasl tyre the only time you would get a puncture it would be on the other side - sods law.

As far as tools go take as much as you can carry, its safe to leave your stuff about on organised trackdays. Most people are very helpful on trackdays and will lend you tools if you need something.

Have fun

Paul

Pictures of the car then?

Where's the day at?

I think you'll murder the T1-Rs if it's dry, you're trying, the car's properly set up and you get a good slice of track time.

They'll be OK to drive home on, but won't last much longer.  Also new T1-Rs have corking tread-squirm on them, so you might like to bed them in (and temper them a bit) on the road for a few hundred miles prior to killing them on the track.

Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

I would hope for a bit of rain, TBH, as tread blocks on new/nearly new tyres in the dry can get too hot & deform very easily.  (I've even seen new blocks tear themselves away from the tyre!).

Road legal track tyres aka 'semi-slicks' are ideal, but if they're out of range, then 3-4 mm road tyres are the next best thing, really.  ;)

Also make sure the oil is right on the max. marker, the brake fluid is on 25-50% (as this can boil) & has been changed recently.

p.s.  The best thing you can do, is spend ~£30 on a session with a qualified instructor, as they will knock off more seconds per lap than any car mods will.  ;)
