My dilema.....what are your views?
« on: 16 September 2004, 16:52 »
I've currently got cash for a mint mk2 burning a hole in whatever I put it in, I've fancied a camper for years and after going to a few aircooled shows this year I'd like one more than ever!
My dilema is this, do I:
1) Keep looking for that mint mk2 and spend all my money on it coz I'll be well chuffed in the end.
2) Split the money in half and spend ?2k on a good condition but not such low mileage golf then spend the other ?2k on a type2 bay window camper (I reckon I should be able to find a reasonable condition one with mot for that).
3) Spend all my money on the golf and look out for a cheap bus over the winter that requires a little bit of welding for its mot (I actually prefer the rat look for a bus so don't mind it a little bit tatty).

C'mon dub minded people what should I do???

Toby

I'd hang on for the valver, never deviate from your original plan it always ends in regret !
Aside from that, you obviously know how hard it is to come by a mint mk2, a shed of a camper will always be as cheap as they are now, where as the decent valvers will just carry on fetching comedy money the rarer they become..

Any more than 2 grand on a original golf is excessive in my opinion ...

Sure you can pay alot more and find what you want, but there's always a steal to be found !

I got mine with 70k on the clock and 90% of the way to being mint for ?800 !

Definately stick to your original plan matey, but try and fins that bargin ;) Just means u have more wedge to spend on her as no car is 'perfect'.

Sound advice Chris, I've been desperately hanging onto this cash for 10months now so parting with it aint gonna be easy unless it's absolutely the right thing.
The valver is my passion, the bus is something I've always fancied but don't know how much I'll enjoy it once I've got it. As I like the rat look for a bus anyway I'm probably better off looking for a cheapie and getting a friend who's handy with a welder to do me a favour.
Cheers Dave, if I could find one for ?2k that I was happy with I'd be well chuffed but after all this time it still hasn't happened, you never know though maybe as the show season ends and winter sets in that bargain may rear its head.

Any other views out there that might change my mind?

Tobz, try and find a nice mk2 for 2k or less, then look for a camper, if you don't find one spend some coin making the mk2 into how you want it to look. Or keep hassling jon_hgv (I think that's his name) and persuade him to sell his as that looks like a right motor  ;D Having just bought a camper though I'm already looking forward to next years shows  ;D
......now officially dubless.

Spend as much on the Mk2 as you need to as this is likely to be the car you use the most.
The camper is going to be an occasional pampered pet with the odd outing, unless your a devoted fan. You can sort it gradually without it causing you daily strife

Hey Gibby
Yeah jon_hgv's motor does in fact look like "the one" have started the hassling already without putting on too much pressure. Sent him a pm yesterday just to get some more info on it...........you never know. Will probably hold out for the best daily driver I can find and then try and find a camper that's a bit of a project. I work with a guy that's handy with a welder, I work within a stones throw of a really great guy (Volksdreams) who specialises in air cooled restoration and I'm not afraid of getting stuck in with my spanners so between us I'd like to think I could sort something out.
It's the freedom that comes with a camper that really appeals to me and I've always fancied driving round the scottish highlands, something I've gotta get out of my system sooner or later (is starting to waffle).

I think you should stick with the Golf idea

We had 2k to spend on a bay camper, we ended up buying one for ?400 with loads of rust, but the reason for this was the ones that were up for 2k were no better if not maybe worse they had just been pugged up all over and the rust was hidden at least we could see the rust and what the probelms were, it had a new mot etc....

For a mint bay you are looking a lot more than 2k so I would stick to the Golf.

David, you said never pay more for a original Golf, I won't let you sell my car for me  ;)

gibby's was a little more than 2k... actually it was a LOT more than 2k (and worth every penny i might add), expect to pay big BIG bucks for one of that standard  ;)
