Mk2 GTI 16v Running like hell, PLEASE HELP!

I've owned this GTi for just over three years now and, apart from the regular servicing and a clutch problem 18 months ago, it's never let me down... Until now!!

When driving, be it at a sedate pace or putting it through it's paces (I drive within the speed limits, honest officer!) The car will start jerking and spluttering like someone's thrown a spanner into it.

I've taken it to a mechanic (useless tit) who cleaned the air intake bits and the dizzy, which left it driving for one week, but now it's back to the same.. I've tried recleaning those bits again (No way am I paying ?60.00 for someone to put a bit of spray on my engine) but it doesn't work!

It's an intermittent problem, sometimes I can just hammer away at the pedal and it does exactly what it says on the tin, other times it splutters so bad that I have to drive it like an old lady and  I'm taken over by dinky little Uno's, Rovers and, today, a 1.2l nova, with some sniggering little kid in the drivers seat!! .  The pride of my beauty is at stake here!  

I will take it to a mechanic, but my experiences with them have always been bad ones so I'm hoping for as much advice as possible so I can understand the cause and, hopefully, get it fixed.

Any advice will truly be appreciated!

I have a 1989 16v and every now and then it drives like crap only between 1700 and 2000 rpm though. It happens after a bit of motorway driving and at night time its poxy i havent got a clue what it is.

My first thought is check all your vaccuum lines, sounds like one is perished.

Gonna check the lines tomorrow (If I can find out where they all are??!).

A bit of an update on my boyracing escapades.. I declined a race with a Tigra today, one of the most upsetting days I've had since becoming the proud owner!!  It was a clear road, beautiful light, plenty of space and just the two if us..    I know I would've taken him.

I'll be on form soon, I know it!

Good call on fuel pump, check the ignition system also. Sounds like a HT fault to me (could be wrong, have been before). Good luck, Steve.

problem sorted!!  It was the airflow, one of the pipes had come undone under the main pipe, very messy repair job... Erm, my mechanic did it, honest.. ..
