Noisy Mark V Golf GTI
« on: 14 September 2009, 13:07 »
Has anybody got any answers to the  :sad:diesel sound I'm experiencing, on tickover only, with my GOLF V GTI.
My car runs perfectly and I have recently changed to a high quility Mobil synthetic oil but this didn't make any difference. Hope somebody has a solution to this. The dealers say there's nothing wrong and that they all sound like this but I'm not convinced.

+1, it's normal.

Direct injection petrol engines tend to have a tendency to sound like this at idle due to the combustion process / injectors.

..........hi mate.Mine does the same & like you i'm not happy with it.Does your's sound ''normal'' on tick over & then get the rattle when warm ? as this is what mine does.Mine is on the AXX engine code 05 reg & if you read though all the post's mentioned on here you will see the the user under the name of Lucas had the same issue & had some parts replaced & now his sounds as it should.
Mine has been to my local VW main dealer & they agree it should not sound as it does. The parts at fault on mine & Lucas car are the cam chain & a few other related parts. My after market warranty covers this so it's going in this week to be repaired.Any further help pm me or Lucas & i'm shure we can help further.

It seems that to a certain extent the diesel sound is normal and nothing to worry about.  But some people seem to have a different problem, maybe it would be helpfull if we could hear a sound clip of the 'problem' noise?

I had the same issue on my 06 GTI.  Sounded fine from cold but as soon as it warmed through it sounded like a bag of bolts.  Changing the timing chain and tensioner sorted it.

My car runs perfectly

A common characteristic, as others have reported

and I have recently changed to a high quility Mobil synthetic oil but this didn't make any difference.

Erm . . . there is no such thing as high quility Mobil synthetic oil - Mobil oils are cr@p, expecially in modern engines.  Put some decent quality, Volkswagen approved oil (to VW standard 504.00), from a high quality European oil company - who use real 'synthetics', and not mineral oil - which Mobil use!

Hope somebody has a solution to this. The dealers say there's nothing wrong and that they all sound like this but I'm not convinced.

The dealer is correct.

Erm, why the need for PMs?  This is a public forum, and we all help each other out in a 'public' manner!
