EGR Valve
« on: 11 September 2009, 11:00 »
Leaking EGR valve,

I recently had my car serviced by a VW dealer and was told that the EGR valve was leaking. How would VW have diagnosed this? Can I see/hear the valve leaking or would this have been picked up via a diagnostic computer?

I have read a few threads and understand that these can become built up with muck. Does anyone know if a build up of cr*p could cause the valve to leak?

Does this have an impact on performance and MPG? If not is there any point trying to fix it?

Does anyone know how difficult it is to remove the EGR and manifold clean and replace? Would this be something pretty easy for a novice?

I don’t want to go through the expensive of buying a new EGR valve when it would just be a faulty clip.

i've never heard of an EGR valve leaking?

did they specfiy whereabouts on the valve??

If i were you i'd get a new o-ring for the pipe and have a look

Removing the EGR is not difficult but you require some allen keys to undo the bolts

What engine do you have?

bit of a strange one,

The car was bought direct from Holland accoriding to the hand book, RHD GTI (red I) badge, TDI on the engine cover (all in red) 150 BHP Oil Burner, Winter sports pack, unbadged ricaro seats, never seen another one with the same wheels, all seems to be conflicting info as to what i have got.

So if its Diesel techniacly its not a GTI correct? although i have heard that these are faster than the petrol.

I had a half price servicing voucher for a VW gargae so thought I would use it, then they handed me a list of work that needed doing that came to over 5k!!!!!!! the car had only just done about 50k miles at this point. So i think they were trying to claw back the half price servicing!!!! they also put incorrect oil as far as as I am concerned, they put Shell Vx 5w-30 in it, i thought it had to PD oil so i have swapped it. Last time I use a VW dealer for servicng.

As for the leaking EGR valve, not really sure that is just what they told me on the service invoice that this need doing at a cost of £224.44. When I acleerate hard the you can hear the turbo kick in but sounds if it is spinning Eccentrically (if that makes sense) until  I get to high revs and then the turbo seems to sound right. it almost sounds like a train getting up to speed. It could all be normal just thought it was worth mentioning.

They also said i need a new headlamp control module at £520.38, headlights seem fine to me, alough I gather this is somethign to do with the hight self adjusting, still it seems rather exsesive.

5K????   what was in the list?

hmm the only thing i can think of is the metal gaskets might have cracked  :undecided:  but these are sold seperately and shouldn't require a whole new EGR valve!!

is there another garage you can take it to for a 2nd opinion?

The price for the headlamp; you got xenons fitted?

yeah got xenons fitted, the car was in france for a while so had french lights fitted, then swapped back when it came back to England. Maybe this has caused the problem.

Front wipers = £23.95 (cleaned grease off wiper now works fine)
r-washer repair = £58.16 (seems fine to me)
EGR Valve and gasget = £224.44
Cam belt and water pump = £420.60 (got this done for £225.09 at a small local garage)
BFC = £55.69 (i guess brake fliud, but can do this myself)
Air con service £99
intercooler hose seals £30.40 (work completed by VW)
tigten front door hinges = £15.86 (to tighten two nuts up???????)
Removal of tow bar and new rear iron and splitter £232.94
left headlamp control modual £520.38
Service £234.88

Total = £1916.27

ooooopsss having gone to the car to get the paper work it would appear that I exagerated the cost quoted, but it was qouted 07/02/2008 (bad memory ) and the car milage at the time was 43204.

Still I think that half the work is unessasary.

but still not sure what to do about the EGR valve, does it have much impact on perforamce and MPG? is it worth bothering with?

I bought the Allard EGR delete pipe so removed the EGR completely.

All it does is recycle the exhaust gases back through the system for a 2nd burn in order to reduce emissions.  Problem is that over time it gets clogged up and results in poor performance

Look on Ebay for it - about £60 delivered and less than an hour of your time to remove and fit :afro:

Would you class this as a worthwile purchase Rhyso? Is there  noticable difference? been considering this for a while but cant justify spending £60 on a shiny piece if pipe lol...

for me it was as my SFS pipe wouldn't stay on due to the normal connector.  With the delete pipe i had more surface area to clamp the pipe on

whether or not it made a performance difference i don't know as the old one was mapped out anyway
