Camshaft Problems

After my car was making a knocking sound (only sometimes) at startup for a quick second or 2 then disappearing, i have dropped it off at the garage who said he has removed the rocker cover and said my camshaft is wearing.

my question is, if it only knocks sometimes would it be the camshaft? I know that if i was travelling at 50mph in 5th gear and put my foot down the car would slightly judder then pick up.

I have been quoted around £880 + vat, for camshaft / cambelt / hydraulics & water pump.

I just dont want to be paying this much if it's not said camshaft

The 150 PD's do eat camshafts I've heard. PM Alex (Ridg) as he had this problem.

As said very common fault on the 150 ARL engine.

Thanks for the replies, i understand it's a common fault, the only thing i cant get my head round is the fact why the car will only knock when it feels like it :laugh:

Seems to me to be a sticky hydraulic, i told them not to do the work, so now i have to pay an hours labour, and i'll take it to a second garage for another opinion :wink:

If you're putting your foot down at 50mph in 5th then your stressing the engine hence the juddering; you should either feed the throttle in until you pass 2000rpm or drop to 4th

I usually have to drop down to 4th in the end :laugh:

I also read that thread yesterday after doing a google search, but tabz didn't say he suffered the same problem as i'm having, mine isn't misfiring or running rough, just a slight knock on start up when either hot or cold

take the cam cover of and have a look for your self, 10 min job and you will find you for your self ( this is what i did when ours went) :smiley:

I keep wanting to take the cover off, but as soon as i look at the job i feel imtidated as it looks a hard job :laugh:

Mine was about double that with the labour and VAT included  :cry:
