oil temp
« on: 17 July 2003, 19:36 »

Can you help? Whats the optimum oil temp for a 8v digi?

My 91 Gti in town driving will linger around 100 degrees C and on motorways linger at a temp of 95 degrees c.

Should the temp be constant and I have always assumed that the optimum temp for cars is bang on 90 degrees C.

Am i correct in my assumptions

Those temperatures sound about the same as my Cabrio.

My 8v digi sometimes reaches 110 degrees, is this too hot?

My 90 8v Digi runs about 90 on main roads and reaches 98 in traffic, although today I saw it go to 102, but it is hot today.

110 sounds a bit hot to me, but then this is the only golf I've had so I've not got much to compare it against!

My 89 8v Digi MK2 used to run around 104 in traffic and 98 on motorways. Never had any probs with it. My MK1 and Mk3 are about the same?

My 1989 8v Digi runs at approx 96deg - it's never got over 100 - even on a hot day.
It's done 170k miles on original engine - oils changed every 3k filter every 9k - still sweet as a nut.

I suppose if the system is sludged up then the oil cooler won't be as effiecient, have you got anti freeze in the system and is your fan cutting in at the right temp?

OK, i am a little worried now cos i have seen my oil go up to 116 degrees before whilst on the motorway and i wasn't going particularly fast (80mph), where is my oil cooler as i think it may be in need of a clean?

What do you guys think??
Thanks,

The oil filter screws onto the cooler ( you can see two water hoses going into it ) Have you got antifreeze in the coolant? This can effect cooling effeciency.

If you need to flush the system, post on this site, I've never done this but have heard of problems.
Let me know how you get on.

Cheers
