Copy of an email sent to from my mate at work, wondered if anyone here can help
hello matey
just a silly email - i was wondering if you could give me the
torque loading figures for a rear wheel bearing say on a mk 3 golf gti as my
corrado's is getting noisy. well the full story is this, a couple of months
ago i replaced both rear bearing's as one side was rumbling, unfortunately i
never knew the figure so i looked through several haynes manuels at
different cars, the figures ranged from 18lb foot to 130 ib foot. so i
basically torqued it to 30lb foot and checked the wheel for resistance and
checked the bearing for overheating. All seemed satis --- for a while, the
trouble is now the nearside is rumbling again.I've checked the loading
again. It had settled down to about 15lb foot so i retorqued it to 30lb foot
but it's still rumbling so I guess the bearing now knackered. Any help would
gratefull. I assume a mk3 golf of say L reg (1993) would be the same. Are the rear wheel bearings not the same as a mk1 or mk2 Golf? They are taper bearings in which case I would have thought 30 lb/ft was far too high?
