i had a snoop at my gear linkage and stuff today and found the nuts around  it where pretty loose! (jus give the linkage a tug see if it wobbles too).. so i thought lets tighten it  ..

did it and the wobblyness has gone down a lot its gone stiffer now way better then before.. it is still a bit wobbly but very minor.. none the less will be changing the bushes as originaly planned on the weekend along with my MAF

so try that guys might solve ya probs out without changing anything.. be careful not damage anything tho

thanks bro,

i sprayed the gear linkage, etc... will see if its affected it in the morning,

i also noticed a little bit of oil near the gear linkage thing.

bit odd.

will be taking it to a mechanic friend of my brothers in oldham on friday or saturday to get it checked out.

im praying he tells me its nothing serious.  i have still not paid for this vehicle, as i have the option to return it if the costs to repair it are too much.  I still have to pay for a service and cambelt on top of this issue. (this is minor in comparison)

Hopefully if i keep the golf (which i hope to do) i will clean out the egr valve an the manifold.

i aint fixing it yet apart from the white grease (which is a minor), im just gettin it checked out for free, i took the vehicle from a trader friend of mine as a favour, so he allowed me 2 weeks to check it out and decide if i wanna keep it.

i was aware of the gear stiffness, i just want to find out if its going to escalate into a major problem or if its only a minor issue which can be rectified easily.

its a 1.9tdi s (basic model) i wanted a GTTDI(02 onwards), but its just too much missions to find a decent car relying on other people to drive me there, etc.  this vw is on a T-plate (1999) and has done 117000.  full service history with reciepts dating back to 2001.

I have this problem too (surprise surprise) and being no mechanic wondered how you get at the linkage to tighten up any loose bolts?

Many thanks

Considering this post is over 5 years old and having the same problem with not much info on the web as to an exact solution other than upgrage to the newer linkage set up, here is what ive found.

Early 1.8Ts AGU engines used the same linkage set up as the MK 3. This was changed to the later and much more reliable set up in around 2000 i believe. This particular problem is very common in the older (better in my opinion) AGU engine.

Fault symptoms are of the above, wobbly gearshift and finding it hard to select gears especially 1st and 2nd.
In most cases there are only 2 relatively cheap parts you have to replace.

Watch     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skdeN-f8bHU       and you should be good to go. All the best.
