Drive Shaft Puzzle
« on: 31 August 2009, 21:32 »
Been working on two friends cars today, both AUM's one is a 2001 Xreg and the othe is a 53 plate. While underneath we noticed that the 53 plate car had a much smaller drive shaft than the 2001 model.Out came the vernier and the later one was around 43mm but the earlier was 52mm.Anyone shed any light on why this could be? Part numbers would be helpfull, this could also clear up why some people can get away without changing arb's up to say 55mm.....

What are your thoughts?

would the later one have a 6 speed box by any chance? and therefore a shorter driveshaft so doesn't need to be quite so beefy to transfer the torque?

seems there are 2 different part numbers.. but it doesn't list any dimensions, and it lists them both if you search in either 2001 or 2003 :undecided:

1J0407271CH drive shaft with constant velocity joints left /
1J0407451DX drive shaft with constant velocity joints left /

1J0407272CT drive shaft with constant velocity joint and balance weight on inner side right /
1J0407452GX drive shaft with constant velocity joint and balance weight on inner side right /

could take me a while to figure out why..

Sorry,i was talking about the drivers side.Did they revise the driveshaft and make it stronger? Is that the same part number for an AUQ?

ah well the part numbers for both were on the same page so no matter. AUQ is 6spd so is different... although from what i can see even those were revised at some point. Get yourself on vagcat.com and have a nosy, not as thorough as etka but has most stuff on it.

The reason i'm asking is because my mate with the 2001 car has air ride, and the smaller driveshaft will help him in his quest to go even lower.

ah in that case just notch the chassis and be done with it  the 5mm saving by swapping shafts isn't worth the ballache imo.
