Clutch queries??????
« on: 25 August 2009, 19:21 »
Looking for some confirmation.    Recently bought a 1997 P Reg 8v GTi. Runs well with a pretty high clutch pedal. A few days after buying it I noticed that the clutch cable was nearly dead so bought a new one and fitted it myself. Now the clutch is slipping a lot which it wasn't before. I am thinking that the clutch needs replacing and am ready to book it in for replacing. Am I right in thinking it's the clutch or could it be something else?????
Also the clutch I am about to book is £175 supplied, fitted and guaranteed for 2 years. Is this the right sort of price to pay?????

Thanks for your help.

Cheers     Deano

Firstly i'd check the cable is fitted correctly.
If the clutch does need doing then thats a very good price

Cheers for the reply.  How do I know if the cable is fitted properly???  The clip is on the pedal ok and runs through the body into the engine bay and then through the arm and clipped on as before. The white strap then released to shorten the cable and the pedal works fine and changes gears no problem just jumps when pulling off (mainly at 2500/3000 revs). I'm pretty sure it's on right and it's the clutch and thanks for the price info. I will be booking first thing in the morning on that advice.

Its strange how it starting doing it after the cable was changed.
However, it does sound like the clutch is on the way out.

are you sure you got the right cable?? (they changed around 95 and both will fit but won't work 100%)

If the cable was on its way out then it may have killed how little life you had left in the clutch to be honest.

It's defo the right cable as the guy in the shop used the chassis number to confirm which one it is. There are 2 different cables (depending on length). I am pretty sure it's the clutch and will be booking it in later. Thanks for all your help guys.     Deano

Despite having the right chassis number and checking it, I would have the cable checked. I had a wrong wishbone for an escort in the right packaging before. Resulted in the wheel comming lose and damaging pretty much everything attached to it :/ (extreme example I know, but apparently it happens quite often (wrong part in the right box I mean :))

Fetched the car back from A1 Clutches in Tipton today. It feels great and pulls well again. The cable is fine and all's well.   Happy Days!!!!!
