MK3 Convertible Problems
« on: 24 August 2009, 19:10 »
I'm new to this forum business so please bear with me.

Just got a great little MK3 golf convertible. All was working fine till sunday, when i went to change the sony CD player to a better one i had in the shed.

I wound -the hood down because it was hot, hooked the CD player out, poped the new one in which intinally worked then stopped.

Checked all the fuses under the drivers side fuse board and back of CD player, all ok, but no CD player working, problem is it stoped the electric hood working! No power, I realised they can be manually opertated by the presuree realease key in the boot which is lucky.

Are there any other fuses to check or pointers on what to look for?? need to check hood switch in case I've loosened any wires with CD supply.

Thanks Lester

sounds like its blown the key in ignition live feed, or the ignition switch has decided to pack up. this is what the stereo and hood have in common. disconnect the stereo and retry the hood

John,

Thanks for your advise. Have now checked all power feeds to hood switch. no power supply.

From what you say, is the ignition used as the control switch for the hood?? Ignition works, car starts ok. Have checked all fuses under dash.

Do you know if there is a dedicated fuse for the hood? It has some fairly large wires to the pump in the boot, i would expect a dedicated fuse somewhere. Is there any safety switches on the handbrake??

Cheers

Lester

the ignition switch has a seperate 'key in ignition' live feed for the hood and the radio, its a red/brown wire .  if you take the lower ign housing trim off you should be able to spot it, see if it looks obviously bodged or damaged, likewise check the stereo plug red/brown wire for any damage. This feed isnt fused at all, so if it shorts the wire will just melt, as its the thinest wire to the stereo its the 1st to go rather than the earths or permanent live feeds.

Not 100% but I'm pretty sure the hood system itself has a seperate fuse & relay above the fusebox, it should be clipped on top. there will be a relay & fuse for the windows as well there so check them all to be on the safe side
