Driving on the Continent
« on: 24 August 2009, 13:16 »
I am driving down to the south of france in a couple of weeks, am needing some advice re headlight deflectors.

anyone had to use these before? where did you get them from?

Can i just use any, or do they have to be specifically for the golf.

I dont have xenons btw.

For non-xenons, just get a set of genuine headlamp protectors which also have the mask in them.  You may need to order them about a week in advance though, because not all stealers keep them in stock.

You can simply use black insulation tape on the headlamp outer lens, but it is very hard to get the position correct, and unless you can do it with the finesse of Vanessa Mae plucking her G string , they will look gash.

Any tips for Xenons (mine are the bi-xenon with AFS)?

You won't have AFS on a Mk5 Golf!

But with the 'standard' B-Xenons, there is a really simple lever inside the headlamp housing.  Look in the 'child section' - Mk5 maintenance + info, and there should be a 'sticky' thread, started by 'The Doc' which explains exactly how to do it.

Thanks for the tip. My car is a Leon so it does have the AFS.

If they are official VW protectors, then there might be marks on them to indicate where to apply tape - but that would usually be mentioned on the 'instruction leaflet' which came with them.  You can simply just use the 'trial and error' method, but it is really hard on modern headlamps with clear plastic lenses - the old skool glass headlamps were much easier in that respect.

Ahhhhhh - sh!t, didn't notice you had the Leon!  :embarassed:

So do your innards look the same as the Golf lights?  On my RS4, which also has AFL, you can ONLY use vag-com - something like 'tourist mode' to set the beams for continental driving - so maybe the Leon is the same.

Just checked and the innards look nothing like the Golf ones, so it looks like its a phone call to the dealer as I don't have VAGCOM
